People still listened to the radio in 2005?

I mean when you couldn't avoid having the radio be in earshot, like when you're hunting for deals at the mall etc.

Surely Nickelback couldn't have been on the radio more in their heyday than Pearl Jam or Creed or Bon Jovi or Guns N Roses or U2 or REM or Coldplay were in theirs, no?

Re: Post Random Music-Related Thoughts You Have
I have my doubts about this too, Soma.
I think I maybe know one Nickelback song and even then I'm not 100% positive if it's actually them or some other generic bonehead rock band from the same period.
For a band that generate so much very vocal disdain, they don't strike me as being particularly ubiquitous and that's partly why I find the whole thing so absurd.

What Burt said. Their music was a lot more formulaic than even safe-rock juggernauts Foo Fighters and REM.

This is either bullshit or you simply weren't exposed to mainstream radio enough during their reign to understand the backlash. What you're essentially saying is "I don't know what they sound like but they can't be that bad, right?"Birds in Hell wrote:I think I maybe know one Nickelback song and even then I'm not 100% positive if it's actually them
Nothing but Devil's advocate posturing I'm afraid.

Re: Post Random Music-Related Thoughts You Have
Creed is a poor example because they are perhaps the most widely hated band of all time. I can't speak for any other band's hey day as I was too young to notice, save for Coldplay, who while not exactly risk takers, are much less obnoxiously cookie-cutter than Nickleback. Though a lot of people hate Coldplay, too.Lament wrote:Surely Nickelback couldn't have been on the radio more in their heyday than Pearl Jam or Creed or Bon Jovi or Guns N Roses or U2 or REM or Coldplay were in theirs, no?

I think I might hate Bon Jovi the most of any of those artists listed, Lament.

I don't find it that hard to avoid mainstream radio, I have to admit.Iprefertheiroldstuff wrote:This is either bullshit or you simply weren't exposed to mainstream radio enough during their reign to understand the backlash.Birds in Hell wrote:I think I maybe know one Nickelback song and even then I'm not 100% positive if it's actually them
I don't think I've heard any Taylor Swift songs and, like Nickelback, there's one song that I think is probably Katy Perry but I honestly wouldn't know with any certainty.
Not really, I'm not making any particular judgement on their merit one way or another (though I'm sure they're pretty bad).Iprefertheiroldstuff wrote:What you're essentially saying is "I don't know what they sound like but they can't be that bad, right?"
I just think the hatred doesn't seem particularly proportional or, in some cases, even genuine.
Nickelback are hardly front-and-centre in public life in 2015 yet the self-righteous bleating continues. It's like some odd meme people can't let go of.

Re: Post Random Music-Related Thoughts You Have
So you're essentially expressing wariness of Nickleback hate being more of a bandwagoning affair than true contempt. I think that's probably fair, but I felt the need to represent the side of the argument that comes from actually disliking their music that much. Sure it's low hanging fruit, but I'm not claiming to be edgy here.
While we're on the topic, would anyone like to throw their hat in the ring and name their least favorite recording artist of all time? There are no wrong answers.

They have a neo-nazi background (their singer played in a band called Kaiserjäger), make atrocious music and managed to sell over 100k copies of their last three albums with two of them being at number one in the german album charts. They also play mostly in the biggest arenas in every city they go to. One of the biggest bands in germany while being pretty much the worst band at the same time.

I suppose I would go with Disturbed. If only because my brother in law is a big fan, and if they didn't exist he could have focused his aural attentions elsewhere for the past 10 years, making him a better person.Iprefertheiroldstuff wrote: While we're on the topic, would anyone like to throw their hat in the ring and name their least favorite recording artist of all time? I was of the understanding that the vast majority of Germans wouldn't stand for this. How do they get air time/promoted/book tours?Mike wrote:They have a neo-nazi background (their singer played in a band called Kaiserjäger)

Re: Post Random Music-Related Thoughts You Have
I'm surprised these guys emerged as one of the more celebrated bands from the nu-metal movement. Everything about them is horrendous except for that percussive screamy thing the singer does. It's like a nod to Korn's Jon Davis, who was obviously awesome.Kaius wrote:I suppose I would go with Disturbed. I was going to say Souljah Boi but I didn't feel like upsetting Geg.
