I have NEVER got hurt going head first.
I have severely twisted an ankle twice going feet first
and once even broke a thumb going feet first (on a hook slide around a tag)
so ive never understood the whole "its safer going feet first"
wonder what Henderson said if anyone ever told him to go feet first LOL
You're definitely more likely to injure yourself sliding head first whether you jam a finger, wrist or shoulder, injure your neck or have a guy come down with his spikes on your hand. There's a reason kids learn the feet first slide. Does everyone get injured? Of course not. I'm just talking percentages. Maury Wills, Lou Brock and Davey Lopes all slid feet first and they stole a few bases too.

How did you hurt your thumb going feet first?
Hook sliding around a tag at 2nd on a rain soaked soggy wet infield, went to reach back for the bag and my hand just stuck in the mud and bam, broken thumb.
I get that its easier to hurt a hand/finger going head first, then the ankle/knee feet first, but both Reyes and Cespedes got hurt the other night feet first, (and oddly enough, Cespedes hurt his thumb LOL) Aramis Ramirez has hurt his knee TWICE this year already going feet first... what would you rather do? break a finger and miss 4 weeks? or ankle/knee and possible be done for the year?
I will say, on hits? id pretty much always go feet first, its on steals, especially of 2nd that i can see headfirst being the way to go... its faster, and, easier to avoid tags.
and for those that think sliding in softball is stupid? Ive seen 3 people get drilled in the back of the head (2 at home 1 at 3rd) as they went into the bases standing with a throw coming from behind... yeah lol ill hit the dirt.
