Actually the president recently said something along the lines of having to be "convinced" to join the Big 12, citing added travel costs (especially to the most nonsensical member of the Big 12 in WVU) and dramatically shifting the recruiting core from CA to TX. One reason BSU and other Northwest schools like UO and OSU have found success is that CA doesn't have as many traditional powers as TX does, and the NW has tapped that well. I think they want the end game to be the Pac-##, and if the Boise metro keeps growing and their academics keep getting better they'd be the best choice for expansion if they can't stop holding their noses at BYU.

For what it's worth per capita we have very good HS football (baseball as well) but with a population of less than 2 million we have to get creative. I like what Riley said about wanting to lock down everything within a 500 mile radius. If we can do a good job there we should be fine. Plenty of talent in places like Denver, KC, Saint Louis, Minneapolis, Iowa, Chicago and Lincoln/Omaha to where if we recruit well there and get lucky in places like Texas, Florida, Cali, Ohio and Georgia we can become much more Nebraska like in football.
Was Nebraska like that back in their Big 8 days? Or did playing in the Orange Bowl a bunch help them out in FL? That's pretty impressive if they can dominate that radius without relying on the big states. It'd mean bad news for the likes of CU, KU, K-State, ISU, etc., but seem 'em in the rearviewmirror, right?
