I try to do at least six sets. Front and each side. Hold for at least a minute. Don't let your back slump.durdencommatyler wrote:How many sets of planks? 10 miles in 76 minutes
Windy as fuck. 39 out. 37 back. Couldn't pull off a 6-minute final mile to come home in 75. Shitty run. 6 sets of planks afterward, just as a fuck you to the plank-haters in this thread.

Re: The Work-Out Thread
I think it's one of those ideas that is sort of technically correct in one sense, but completely misses the point. If they're arguing that the effect of doing planks will plateau regarding getting a 6 pack, or making your abdominal muscles denser or "popped out," then they are probably right. That doesn't mean they aren't worth doing, and it also completely misses the point that no ab exercise will give you a 6 pack and that for 99% of people, the battle to get a 6 pack isn't about making the ab muscles bigger or stronger, it's about getting rid of that layer of fat over the ab muscles that they already have. Personally, I think planks are great.warehouse wrote:im pretty sure what you quoted was totally wrongRangi Guy wrote:Just quoting something I'd read somewhere. I tend to do them adding in reaching taps alternating the arms - that pretty much kills me after 30 or so....turned2black wrote:Hmmmmm. The only time in my life I actually had a 6-pack was from doing planks exclusively as ab work. The plank will not "lose its potency" if you mix things up with variation. I also use planks to build stamina.Rangi Guy wrote:turned2black wrote:Huh?red calzolaio wrote:ahh planks.
not doing too much for you if you can hold it steady for a minute or so.
Because the plank is a static bodyweight exercises it quickly loses its potency once you reach a certain strength level, and then you’re pretty much just hanging out.
If you can already hold the plank for 30-60 seconds and you’re not looking to set a Guinness world record then try switching to exercises that challenge your stability dynamically, like a set of push-ups or more difficult variations of the plank.
And to be honest, the notion that if you can to do it for 30 to 60 seconds then you can set a "world record" is crazy. When I was doing them for 1:30, I'd be feeling great at 30, feeling like shit at 60 and holding on for dear life at 90. Even at my most fit, doing them for more than 2 minutes or so would result in me wobbling and falling to the floor in a heap of sweat.

Re: The Work-Out Thread
I go through phases with planks. I usually do them towards the end of my workout and already pretty fatigued. Holy crap they're tough and I hate the side ones especially.

Re: The Work-Out Thread
I think I forgot to mention that for the last month or so, I have been running in a pair of Skechers GoRuns. I saw them for $40 in some crappy mall shoe store and picked them up almost as a joke. Guess the joke's on me because they are actually really good shoes and less than half the cost of the New Balance 1600s I have been wearing. They have a weird bump in the middle of the sole, which kinda forces you to run on your forefoot. These are the first generations of GoRuns, which is why the were $40. It think the newest versions have an MSRP of $80, but generally go for $60 to $65. I won't recommend them over my 1600s, but certainly at just $60 they are a fantastic value and a great shoe. They are 6.5 ounces. I can't believe I just recommended a Skechers running shoe. Seems so wrong.

Re: The Work-Out Thread
Got in a good one last night. I was saying I was proud to knock up my weights some but I tweaked my left deltoid, right where it joins arm. I strained that shoulder pretty good last summer & it's been easier to irritate ever since.
Oh, I finished with a plank last night.

Re: The Work-Out Thread
I still don't get the planking. So you do it for like a minute (or however long) with your left arm extended out. Then rest or whatever. Then do another minute (or so) with your right arm extended out? Is that it? Or can you do it without extended an arm? Does that also work? I need to watch a video or something.turned2black wrote:Good man!Biff Pocoroba wrote:Got in a good one last night. I don't extend my arms. Just hold the position for as long as you can.

Re: The Work-Out Thread
There's a couple different variations (on forearms or push up postion, feet up one at a time or left toes on the ground, one arm alternate, etc) but the key is keep your torso straight with no bend at the hips. Sounds easy but if you're not feeling it within 30 seconds you're doing it wrong. I do 90 seconds, 30 second rest, repeat and then another 60 seconds. Boom, 5 minute ab workout.durdencommatyler wrote:I still don't get the planking.
