Tell me about yr music collection: digital, CD, vinyl, etc.

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

I have about 75-100 CDs stashed in a box in the basement and that was already the leftovers after I rid myself of hundreds I didn't want any more. According to Discogs I have about 319 records, which is probably closer to 400 now - all stored on Ikea expedit shelving.

As for digital media, my world has been turned upside-down since I discovered Xbox Media Center (XBMC) which has since been renamed as Kodi (http://kodi.tv/about/ ). It's an open-source media library software that is so user-friendly and fun to use. It makes me want to collect/sort my digital media the same way I used to organize my CDs and DVDs. I currently have around 1TB of music (mp3/flac and some HD-audio) and around 500GB of Movies/TV. It scans the file tags and filenames against online databases to build all of the metadata for your collection like summaries, ratings, cover art, etc. Here's an example, you can see the interface is very Netflix-y

If you want to have a lot of fun you can control it with a tablet/phone, or my recommendation is to get an IR receiver for your PC (the Flirc is like $20 https://flirc.tv/ ) and then use a logitech universal remote with Kodi. My entire library can now be accessed from the couch.

Guess what? Now it's done it all feels kind of redundant and I can easily imagine a time when I'll get rid of the rest and move to digital only. Unlike books, where I feel as though the tangible object remains clearly preferable to the digital alternative, I really don't have any lingering fondness for hanging onto my music in a physical form. In every respect, a lossless digital file seems like the better option.

How about you, OB?
Guess what? Having lived with this question for a while, I've decided that I'm sticking with CDs and will probably dedicate myself to slowly picking up a good percentage of the things I've downloaded in FLAC over the last few years. Repurchasing things I've already bought the digital version of seems redundant but that's the position that I find myself in.

In short, because I think it's still the physical music format with the most advantages and least disadvantages.

Cd's just feel and look so funny to me since ive started collecting vinyl.

What sucks for me right now is when i got my new computer, I thought I had transferred my digital music to my external hd, apparently I failed at that.

So, now im relying on rdio.com and other streaming services to never ever ever ever go out of business.

Sure, but why use a physical format at all? You seemed to be moving away from that.

Why would someone get rid of their CDs at this point? What are you getting in return, $1 per disc?

1 record takes up the space of 4 CDs.
