Re: Kanye West
I spend a lot more time listening to music than I do watching awards shows and reading celebrity gossip, so the fact that he is a genius in the recording studio is considerably more pertinent to my life than the fact that he is basically a buffoon everywhere else. Ultimately I don't think either reality negates the other one, but at least in this case it seems like the one person who would have legitimate cause to be offended doesn't care (Beck was a bit of a prankster in his day too, after all), so I feel like my outrage would be a little anticlimactic.

Dct, how much of Kanye's stuff have you heard? (Legitimate question -- nothing combative intended.)

Re: Kanye West
For the record im not outraged and as far as I can tell Kanye is just playing the american public. From all accounts he's actually a really good guy (have a friend who worked in the studio with him)
Ive tried his music a couple times but it hasn't stuck. Ive never sat through an entire album so its perhaps unfair of me to speak about his talents but off the bat it never hit me. From my limited perspective, the beats and rhythms are often disjointed and that is just not the type of hip hop i enjoy.

Re: Kanye West
I'm not a big fan of coming into threads for artists or shows (or whatever) that I don't like and ripping shit apart. Discussion is one thing, but beating shit down? That's not fun for me. I've never been much for trolling. If I don't like something, I just try to stay away from it. So, I'll just say Kayne West really isn't my thing.
And while I certainly respect those that love his music (especially someone like KD who speaks well and has extremely well considered opinions, and has earned nothing but my admiration and appreciation), I'll never understand how anyone (not even Beck) could seriously use the word genius to describe Kayne West.
But whatever. I'm sure a lot of folks around here feel the same way about me and my non-stop Annie Clarking. So, there it is.

Re: Kanye West
Pretty much this...maybe my only level of irritation with the thing (and that's too strong a word anyway), is trying to fit Beck into this role of being the middle-of-the-road, milquetoast songwriter that's a safe spot for the Grammys. I get thinking Beyonce should have won, but whatever opinions someone has about Beck's work, I don't think he's a good example of bland musical conservatism.Kevin Davis wrote:I spend a lot more time listening to music than I do watching awards shows and reading celebrity gossip, so the fact that he is a genius in the recording studio is considerably more pertinent to my life than the fact that he is basically a buffoon everywhere else.
