Dude, his sample was thematically relevant in "Diamonds from Sierra Leone". That's insane.

Okay, but... why is that insane? Isn't it obvious? I mean, that's the name of the song. Isn't it stupid not to sample the thing you're referencing? Isn't that hiphop 101? Or are you just showing off how much you know about/recognize the film?LoathedVermin72 wrote:Dude, his sample was thematically relevant in "Diamonds from Sierra Leone". That's insane.

Re: Kanye West
I think right from the beginning Kanye's production capacities are pretty clear -- even on Jay-Z's "Blueprint" album, you can feel how Kanye's samples bring those tracks to life in a way that is fairly unprecedented -- they're not "beats," per se, but integral parts of the composition that converse with the rapper and have their own internal sense of logic to them -- rises and falls, diminuendos and crescendos -- not that you couldn't apply those words to other producers as well, but even early on Kanye's tracks were pretty peerless. His range was pretty evident right out of the gate, too -- his two most identifiable tracks on "Blueprint" were Jackson 5 and Doors samples (consequently this song -- "Takeover" -- is probably the single piece of Doors-related music in the world worth listening to).
"MBDTF" is in another class of music altogether -- I would not be surprised to someday hear or orchestral composers, rock bands, jazz musicians, etc. claiming inspiration from that record. Its approach to arrangement is so idea-rich and on-point down to the last detail that it transcends its own basic language. That it does all of this in a way that isn't overly academic or remotely inaccessible is equally remarkable.

I actually can't think of anything more obnoxious than LV as a Kanye fan. I hope this happens.

Christ, fuck it, I guess I can't even be excited by discovering an artist I enjoy now. I'll keep it to myself.

I wasn't referencing your post. Though I'm not sure how I'm "showing off" knowledge of anything when the sample announces its title right away.durdencommatyler wrote:Calm down, Jordan.

Re: Kanye West
I'm just gonna throw this out there. And y'all can take it, leave it, or rip it apart. But I think sampling is kinda dumb and super lazy. And it's a big reason why I can't get into most hiphop/rap music.
Sorry team. I'll go fuck myself, promptly.
