I mean, I have watched porn. But it's not something I seek out and few with any kind of regularity.

A lot of the rap I grew up with wasn't at all. Stuff like Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, and the like were really really good without being misogynistic, or violent. I know there are rappers out there today like that, but I just don't listen to much new rap, or new music in general much anymore.

I found a Tribe Called Quest CD in a rental car one time and really enjoyed it. I also own one Mos Def album and a Black Star album. I need some guidance.

I'm not even talking about overt references to misogyny or violence (though the 'bitches and niggas' shit gets old fast). Just the tone of almost every song I hear is like a mean spirited attack. Not that there is anything inherently wrong with that (except that its fucking done to death), I just don't want to hear someone yell at me for the length of an album.

I guess people listen to it in a way that they are the guy rapping, they are the badass, but I can't get in that headspace I guess. I just hear a guy yelling at me. Fuck man, I get it! Get off my case!

That said, maybe I actually did like it better when it was just crazy violent and hateful gangsta rap. This political shit is as annoying as it is when Homeboy Eddie is doing his annoying political shit.

Or maybe its just nostalgia. I'm gonna go listen to Gin and Juice.

Thanks Geg, I'll listen to this when I get home.

If I like it will you take me under your wing?

I used to have Lupe Fiasco's The Cool - that was a pretty good album

I saw Lupe at Lollapalooza back in 07 or 08. Very good. Instant admiration.

I saw him at Big Day Out in 2011 - he's a great live performer
