Re: D3 Round3ba: Fatal vs. Wishlist
This won't be close, but Wishlist is one of the most underrated songs in the catalog, I think. A traditional sentiment delivered with some very clever lyircs, a great solo, and subtle performances all around.

I don't think there is a lot of hate for it.

Fatal is great but i believe ill vote for wishlist. Really been loving that tune lately. I absolutely love the production on it and the guitar interplay is so beautiful. I wish they took the time to craft such intricate play these days.

It's a classic matchup of Stone vs Ed, and gotta go with Stone. I would have voted for Wishlist if Stone hadn't sabotaged it by pretending he couldn't use an e-bow.

I don't mind the studio take of Wishlist. Live, meh. Fatal though, I love. It should have been on Binaural.

Wishlist sucks so hard it could probably handle all three of us at once.

It just plods. And I find it trite. And I feel it is misunderstood by most of the PJ community. The solo has some nice tones but overall I'm left feeling empty.
And from the old board:

I hope this doesn't wreck anyone's enjoyment but I always found this song to be quite sad, about a man not living up to all that he felt he could be in another's eyes. Maybe this is with hindsight that his marriage to Beth fell apart but was this Eddie voicing his inadequacies? The last verse in particular I find really heart wrenching, especially 'I wish I was the verb 'to trust' and never let you down'.
Is this a man who knows that he can never live up to his partner's expectations? And does he know that she won't ever let herself depend on another, allow him to be 'the pedal brake that she depends on'?
I wish I could hear it as positively as everyone else here has, but I hear a quiet acceptance that he will never be the keyring and he throws in a few positive/favourable memories harking back to happier times to fool either himself or the person he is speaking to.

Interesting. I'm definitely hearing it that way now that you've brought it to my attention.LetMeSleep wrote:It just plods. And I find it trite. And I feel it is misunderstood by most of the PJ community. The solo has some nice tones but overall I'm left feeling empty.

But how does that make it bad? I guess maybe we just subjectively disagree on finding it "plodding" and "trite."

And all of that should make it more interesting to me. My wife always bemoans my sad folky bastard music (Ryan Adams etc) but most of it either has humour or bitterness. See Dylan, Costello, Adams.
I should add that the song may be a successful composition, it's that I don't care for it.
