Re: Give examples of artists avoiding the sophomore slump
I think some of you guys are misconstruing what a sophomore slump really means. To have the potential for said slump, I would think that an artist's debut album would require some sort of widespread acclaim. Thus a case like Sigur Rós, for example, wouldn't work since I don't think Von was or is really all that highly regarded outside of maybe a small subset of people (of which I guess I am one, since I think it's good, just not so much as the rest of their discography). And then of course, the second album has to be highly regarded as well, which I think is where LV's reference to that other thread makes sense.

Re: Give examples of artists avoiding the sophomore slump
You're right, but I don't think the phenomenon applies only to artists with widely acclaimed debuts. Unprecedentedly successful records are hard to follow up at any point in an artist's career; with new artists people just don't have any frame of reference for what ebb-and-flow looks like in that particular case, so by default it just kind of ends up looking like the artist had one big statement to make before losing the plot.Brett wrote:I think some of you guys are misconstruing what a sophomore slump really means. I would agree that it's a bit of a myth; some artists' best records just happen to be their first.

Would Interpol count? Their second album is good, but they really peaked with TOTBL.

The new Field Report album is really good. Not as good as their debut album but they avoided the Sophomore slump. LOVE this band.
