Dr. Van Nostrand wrote:can anyone who keeps up with more college football then me give me some reasons to be excited about Jameis Winston? im more interested in seeing the Bucs go for Mariota, but unless something drastic happens then i believe they will be taking Winston at #1, and im sure he is good but i can help but see Byron Leftwitch when i watch him. i hear lots of praise for him fitting the ball into tight windows and things like that but i feel like the reason he seems to fit the ball into those tight windows is because his windup is long and slow and it gives the defense a better chance to break on the ball. i dont watch nearly enough to really know the goods and bads of him, but even though he would be a bit of a project, i think the Bucs have the ability to draft Mariota and sit him being Glennon for a year or 2 while he learns more of the pro style system and also while the Bucs learn how to use more of his abilities. so anyway, its still a ways away but it feels like the chances of Tampa not taking Winston are getting smaller every day so i want to start feeling good about him being the pick for the Bucs
Go check out the win totals for his career. Lost one game in 2 years, is already a pro style guy, great arm, could go pro in baseball. Tremendous athlete (though not as agile out of the pocket as some), Prototypical size for the position. Generally unflappable in games no matter what the score on the board is at the time. Athletically there is very little reason to doubt him. Proven winner, able to make every thrown and go through progressions. Compares to: Cam Newton but is probably/definately a better pure pro style QB at this stage in his career. Was the best player on the field for the majority of his career. I think his release is probably better than you think. Made last years FSU team a lot better than they really were. (NFL.com "Mayock" compares him to Eli Manning)

Negatives: Lacks maturity and judgement. Not anywhere near as good a runner as Cam Newton, is overconfident in his arm talent at times... sort of the same way Farve was and will occasionally make an ill advised through because of it. Could embarrass the team if the team doesn't do a good enough job working with him and keeping him on track. Has been plagued by legal issues that could dog him if he doesn't mature quickly. Newton had similar maturity issues (though no where close to the same legal issues) but weathered the storm and his team won the last two NFC South titles. Is not going to get the benefit of the doubt from anyone.

He's got a leg up on Mariota by already playing a pro style set.

Mariota is crushing him in judgement and maturity but most people believe Winston is more ready to play the pro game than Mariota right now. Mariota could wow people in interviews, but I'm pretty confident Winston will be the first QB taken.

Me personally I like Glennon, but in this day and age it's going to be difficult for the team to keep a #1 draft pick on the bench for long enough to be beneficial.

i really cant see Glennon being on the team unless they plan on drafting Mariota, if Winston is the pick then im sure they plan to start him week 1 and will trade Glennon for what ever they can get and pick up a Vet to be the back up.
the off the field stuff really does scare me, especially because the Bucs just got rid of a first round QB who wasnt Mature enough to stay in the NFL, so i worry about drafting one who could actually go to jail at some point, but i trust the Bucs front office to make the right call on the off the field stuff, but i need to start watching his on the field stuff to see if it starts to impress me

Same here. It is a shame in this day and age that if you can't start right away, most times you don't get a shot. I think Glennon could be a really good QB if he had some time as a backup to a decent starter. I'd love it if they kept him, but that is doubtful.

As a Falcons fan. I was afraid of Glennon. I wasn't in the least concerned about McCown. I really think Glennon hasn't and perhaps won't get a fair shake.

Leonard Williams probably has the highest grade, but I'm really not sure what the Bucs need. Between Mariota and Winston, I think either way you're getting a guy who can win.

It's only the damn Colts that get to plug in hall of fame types every 15 years.

80s-90s 49ers would like a word with you, as well as the 80s-90s Colts who were continually whiffing on the likes of Art Schlichter and Jeff George.

Sigh, Jeff George.....fuck that guy.

Yeah Montana to Steve Young was pretty good, so was Bledsoe to Brady and Farve to Rogers.

Most of the rest of us... suffer.

True, I'm having a tough time thinking of a team that's had it rougher at QB over its history than the Bucs.

Stafford by himself likely saves the Lions from that fate. Maybe the Bears have an argument as well, but between McMahon, Harbaugh, and Cutler they probably have enough to get by the Bucs.

Brunell and Garrard were more than competent enough to take the Jaguars out of the discussion for their short history. They've only recently had shit QBs and that development has dovetailed with their overall roster gradually becoming terrible. They went to the playoffs with Brunell and Garrard was good enough to win 9-10 games with a decent roster.

So yeah, Chris Conley just made some money last weekend.

Could have used better QB play at Georgia. Absolutely RIDICULOUS combine for that guy.

Him and Vic Beasley wow.

About LA...it boggles my mind that the city hasn't had an NFL team in a decade or two. Football needs to return to that market.
I've always liked you, Coach.

Yeah, LA really should have a team. It's bizarre that they don't. And I already hate going to LA. Mostly because of the traffic. So the Faiders inhabiting the city kinda makes sense.

In hindsight, it's really not that mindboggling--LA has been very effective leverage in convincing cities to bend over the taxpayers to build palatial stadiums that the owners and the NFL should be using their own damn money on. (That's why I have a lot of respect for Bob Kraft in this regard since he paid for Gillette.) Plus, because the NFL is perhaps the most TV-driven sport, they could play their games almost anywhere and still make a shitload of money. The only reason why the LA talks are getting hot right now is because a couple of stadiums are legitimately shitholes that need to be replaced. (In the case of the Raiders, I mean that literally.)
I understand that, but I don't think the NFL has left the city without a home team just so other owners could leverage it to get a stadium built....but then again you never know with this crazy league these days.

The NBA's doing the same thing to Seattle right now. It's a dirty, dirty game.

I can't wait for this infamous unidentified Dez Bryant video to finally surface. Adam Shefter was interviewed on ESPN 1000 today and wouldn't give details, but said he knows what's on the tape and has been working the story since September.

Did shefter actually see it? Word is a bunch of reporters know what is on it but no one has been able to actually see it.

He did not. It was a gripping interview. I've never heard him that cagey when asked specific questions. He was asked if what others saw was criminal. He responded that the Cowboys don't want it getting out, and would go no further.
