I'd love for Jack to return but I'd be equally excited to see what Matt Chamberlain could bring to (or, rather, out of) the band at this stage.

PJ needs a new drummer just to reinvigorate this tired debate.

I like Dave's drumming.
He was a bit over-the-top during the Ten tour, though it suited the material and the vibe of the band in that time, but I really like his playing on Vs and Vitalogy.

I love Matt, but his playing suits Soundgarden so much better than PJ. Jack brought out the best in the band and sparked some of their most creative material. Dave rocked like a beast.

Someone's uploaded to YouTube what's probably the best recording from the short time when Matt Chamberlain was in the band (apart from the official Alive video clip), worth checking out if you haven't heard it before.

Jack - he came in at the right moment for PJ, bringing a warmth to their sound that has been absent since. his contributions in the songwriting department yeilded unique songs as well that were much more agreeable to my ears than Matt's for instance. of course, one can argue over his live pedigree but what really matters in the end are the albums and PJ hasn't succeeded in making albums as strong as Yield and the others before it. some great moments here and there but nothing as consistently challenging/eye-opening/thrill-inducing.
Dave - again, the guy arrived at the right time. Vs. is a funky piece of work that also has a baffling force of impact (thanks to the fine production and the seemingly perfect health of the band's interplay). one thing that is great about this band is its chameleon quality at the time: Vs.-Vitalogy-No Code are three very different albums that are mostly recognizable as Pearl Jam because of Ed's voice. bar that and it's almost as if you had 3 different bands at work. for Vitalogy, Dave managed to cut the funk in his playing while still being inventive and creative. love it.
Matt - let me get this straight: i hold Matt in very high esteem. alas, it's not his work with PJ that earned it. i just think that his style never fitted the band all that much save for a handfull of songs (Insignificance, Parting Ways, Can't Keep, Life Wasted, GSMF, The Fixer(!!)...). he's a "machine" in a live setting, yeah, but i'm more like quality>quantity. as far as songwriting goes, he's basically too technical for this band, especially for Mike. you can tell when one member of the band has a hard time following the odd time signatures and the whole song suffers from this. SG is where it's at when you want to hear Matt. i just get the idea that he's holding back with PJ and that's just wrong.

Jack will always get the nod b/c he helped spark their most creative period, but I think there was alot of "right place, right time" goin on there too. I think Binaural and Riot Act still have some pretty interesting moments.
That doesn't take away the fact that Dave A and Matt C have been hugely important. Still don't think they've topped Vs. song for song. I'd put Binaural up against any of their albums as a whole and the first 6 years of their live output with Cameron are their absolute best imo.

Amen, it will be such a shame if the never get to a point where they are comfortable talking about all the happenings of the dave a situation so they can give all the past drummers their respect for helping make pj what they were durring their times in the band. I want a true career spanning documentary at some pointBirds in Hell wrote:Still flabbergasted that these dudes weren't a part of the PJ20 film and shows.Birds in Hell wrote:Irons

It's not Matt's problem that Mike would rather be playing a Kiss or Van Halen cover than something with some merit. Perhaps it's time for a new lead guitarist.mastaflatch wrote: as far as songwriting goes, he's basically too technical for this band, especially for Mike. you can tell when one member of the band has a hard time following the odd time signatures and the whole song suffers from this.

Re: Let the drummer debate continue!
Maybe, but then, Pearl Jam isn't a prog band. maybe Jeff has some kind of curiosity for this kind of music but that's about it. let's just bear in mind that Eddie had to write some lyrics to Comfortably Numb in his palms. Comfortably Numb! that's about as known as it gets when it comes to great classic rock lyrics. i'm only presuming here but i think that most of PJ would rather play something more fluid, even if it's in 5/4 metric than songs with multiple time/mood changes.Wendy Carlos's Twin wrote:It's not Matt's problem that Mike would rather be playing a Kiss or Van Halen cover than something with some merit. also, as much as i despise Kiss and Van Halen, a song doesn't become great as soon as you make it technically complicated. i'd much rather hear this band play stuff that they're able to than fucked-up "songs" about evacuating with zero passion. Matt seems to have understood this lately but alas, it doesn't mean he's bringing anything up to his talent to PJ.

"Evacuation" is one of my favorite Pearl Jam songs.
