Leaving 'young' out of that list, I think that's all great and not at all inconsistent with also welcoming the different perspectives that age can bring.Strat wrote:Stay young, stay vibrant, stay optimistic, stay inspired about the world around you. be open.
I know I'm probably (in fact, almost certainly) reading too much into the quote but the fetishisation of youth, or more accurately of adolescence, is something that bugs me quite a lot generally, as though inquisitiveness and creativity are the sole preserve of that age group. Believe me, I was a complete idiot when I was a teenager. When I see people chasing 'youth' as an ideal in itself, I think of it as a closing, rather than opening, of the mind.
Look, all I'm saying is that, as he gets older, I'd prefer Ed look to things like this:
And not so much to this:

How to grow older and remain interested in rock music while not forgoing a sense of maturity (or even dignity) is something I find myself wrestling with a lot. I went through a period where the pleasure I undeniably get from loud, simple rock music caused me a serious degree of guilt.
It's difficult. Trying to see rock music as a legitimate and meritous artform that can be disentangled from its association with youth/adolescence seems important to me.

Re: General Pearl Jam Bitching
i dont think youth/adolescence just represents immaturity. when i think of the association of rock music and youth, i think of hopefulness or the energy young people have before they become old and cynical. i'm not saying there isnt a part that is immature, its just not the only thing.Birds in Hell wrote:How to grow older and remain interested in rock music while not forgoing a sense of maturity (or even dignity) is something I find myself wrestling with a lot. Re: General Pearl Jam Bitching
I think there's a difference between being young at heart and young in practice -- I wish I could still experience things, music especially, with the sort of infinite sense of wonder that I did when I was younger. I am happy to have my adult senses about me and my adolescent struggles behind me, but there's no shame in accepting that (for many people) there are virtues in youth that maturity inevitably wears down, and wanting to salvage those virtues for the long haul. When the desire to remain young puts an artist into midlife crisis mode, it's unattractive, but Neil Young strikes me as a great example of someone who has never lost touch with his inner kid (probably 30 % of his book was about model trains and his electric car, and even at age 70 he continues to look for ways that music might feel new to him), and has been a model of integrity for years to pretty much anyone who pays attention to him.
Music is a whole lot more than just sound, but in the end -- it's just sound. Any common understanding that certain sounds are more appropriate for certain age groups is arbitrary and ultimately means nothing. Enjoy your feedback with a clear conscience, Friend Spencer.
