Demo Mix Tape

Post by B »

You guys are the right people to ask ...

I want to make a playlist/mix tape of demos that either never became songs or are so different from the final product that they are pretty much a different song.

Here's what I have, and I can't figure out how to order them. Someone help me. Feel free to add anything I've forgotten.

Right now, it's 15 minutes too long, so feel free to kick something out. Just mention what you're kicking out.

Gossard Demos
7-Up (Pushing Forward Back)
Folk "D"
?

Touring Band 2000
Foldback
Harmony
Thunderclap

No Code
Small Mosquito (Red Dot)

Rarities Unreleased Cuts
Anything in Between
Wishing Well
Puzzle and Game (Light Years)
Sunburn

Avocado
Cold Confession
Let It Ride
2X4
The Only Cloud in the Sky
Open Door
Rearranged Furniture
Rearranged Priorities
10 Billion Years
Lucky 13
Breeze in D

Lightning Bolt
Pendulumorphisis (Pendulum)

soooooo ... Get to work!
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Maybe throw in more demos that actually became songs and split this into two discs.

Wishing Well is a cover so you can throw that one out to begin with.

The Acoustic song from PJ20

Then there's Chinese as well

Are you just doing studio recordings and not live takes?

Thanks, I missed those because their with my studio albums.

And correct, I'm avoiding live takes.

I could probably have my arm twisted into Of The Earth, but I think I lack a decent recording.

it's going to be hard to cut 15 minutes unless you're just making quality judgments.

Songs with fairy different demos include speed of sound, gone, and NAIS.

If you count covers where an official release never surfaced you can add I've got a feeling.. Now you're 35 minutes into disc II. Adding chinese and acoustic 1 you're over 40. Just go chronologically at that point and cut as close as you can to the halfway mark without dividing a session into two

Mookie Blaylock Demos -
Just a Girl
Weird A
2000 Mile Blues
Instrumental 2 (has hints of Garden)
Evil Little Goat (sucks)
Daddy Could Swear I Declare (sucks)

Chinese
Cready Stomp
Acoustic #1 - PJ20
Be Like Wind & Untitled - McCready from PJ20
Need to Know (Fixer) - Cameron from PJ20

I'm Still Here
4-20-02

The McCready tracks and the two Ed solo "songs" there at the end may not qualify for you, but, regardless...

A lot of this violated my original plan of trying to compile things that I didn't have on another album.

These were the rules as I understood them.
I want to make a playlist/mix tape of demos that either never became songs or are so different from the final product that they are pretty much a different song.
Does "becoming songs" equal "released officially"? Or does it mean made it onto an proper studio album (including Lost Dogs)?

Rules are for squares anyway. So, nevermind, I don't care.

Actually if you include most of what I put on there, I don't care about much of these other semantics.

What about songs like Angel or Leatherman in that case?

They're non-albums songs that didn't appear on Lost Dogs.

(Not to mention songs like Footsteps, Dirty Frank, Alone etc. which were on Lost Dogs but in a substantially different form than their original release.)

I suppose this is a good time to mention that I'm currently working on a comprehensive update to JasonA's B-Sides & Rarities collection from a few years back.

It will also take in the EV solo rarities from joostone's Innocent Bystander compilation, as well as rips of songs featured on officially released DVDs but not available elsewhere (e.g. RITFW w/ Neil Young from PJ20 'The Kids Are Twenty' DVD, The Waiting w/ Tom Petty from his 'Running Down a Dream' DVD). At the moment it spans 10 PJ discs, plus 7 EV discs.

Yeah, about time too Ridleybradout! I was just thinking the other day how lazy you've been on the mix front.

...

Seriously though, how do you find the time?? Do you not sleep, man?
