Re: First Single from #10: Mind Your Manners
Of course, I have no idea how close or far away the single is. Hopefully it drops Thursday. But if it doesn't, it won't kill my excitement. I'm just really looking forward to hearing it.

MYM Debate
IKevin Davis wrote:"Mind Your Manners" is still about my least favorite song in Pearl Jam's discography. "Infallible" makes questionable use of what could have been a novel aesthetic for the band, but even so my preference for it over the petulant, moronic "MYM" is unequivocal.

Re: Division 4 Round 3av: Mind Your Manners vs. Infallible
"Mind Your Manners" is like one of Eddie's between-song political rants distilled into song-form: He reduces the people he disagrees with to uncomplicated, one-dimensional fools with no characteristics to speak of beyond their malicious intent to infringe upon his own personal freedoms; he doesn't really have a clear logical point to speak of, but he rants and raves and stomps as though a bellicose fit is a message in itself; and he uses ridiculous phrases like "or we could something else," which sounds like one of those stupid internet memes like "shitty song is shitty" or "Mind Your Manners sucks because Mind Your Manners." The whole song sounds like a teenage boy having a fit about being made to wear school uniforms. I hate everything about it with a level of hatred I have never before experienced in regards to this band.stip wrote:what is petulant/moronic about MYM?Kevin Davis wrote:"Mind Your Manners" is still about my least favorite song in Pearl Jam's discography. I don't hear any of that.
In the past, when we've disagreed, I've appreciated your POV and the ease and clarity with which you express yourself. I've tended away from descriptions and deeper diving because this message board in particular seems to hate it, but I applaud that you've always maintained a rightful necessity towards it. You're obviously one of my favorite posters and someone I'd consider a friend though we've never met face to face. And I respect your opinion here as well.
But I don't hear that. This is one of the rare times where we're on totally different wave-lengths. This is almost as divisive as Kanye.

Suffice it to say the feeling is mutual, dct. And I very well could be missing the mark on "MYM" and hearing something completely different from the song's actual meaning. But that's how the song comes across to me.durdencommatyler wrote:Huh.Kevin Davis wrote:"Mind Your Manners" is like one of Eddie's between-song political rants distilled into song-form: He reduces the people he disagrees with to uncomplicated, one-dimensional fools with no characteristics to speak of beyond their malicious intent to infringe upon his own personal freedoms; he doesn't really have a clear logical point to speak of, but he rants and raves and stomps as though a bellicose fit is a message in itself; and he uses ridiculous phrases like "or we could something else," which sounds like one of those stupid internet memes like "shitty song is shitty" or "Mind Your Manners sucks because Mind Your Manners." I would read any essay/whatever you write on PJ's music. Just so you know. If the 33 1/3 people ever call you up and want you to do a book on ANY PJ album, I'd endorse it will all the power in the universe.Kevin Davis wrote:Suffice it to say the feeling is mutual, dct. The calls are coming again in June! They shot down my Taylor Swift proposal in the last round of cuts last year -- this may be just the inspiration I need to try a little something different this time.

I am on team DcT here as well. I dont hear a fit being thrown by EV at all. This could partially be due to the fact I often find myself a liberal tree hugging hippie that rages against the religious right. But i hear truth in the words being sung. I also dont think a punk song is the medium in which dialogue between two opposing views is meant to be hashed out. I think Infallible does a better job at expressing frustration in what he believes in, and less in your face emotion that MYM leans on.durdencommatyler wrote:I would read any essay/whatever you write on PJ's music. You guys, this is Eddie Vedder we're talking about. Of course anything he writes/says concerning anyone of right-leaning inclination is going to be condescending and reductive. This is the guy who wrote "Bu$hleaguer" and impaled an effigy of Bush's head on a microphone regularly not too long ago.
I'm a left-leaner and devout atheist myself, but goddamn do I hate liberal smugness.

I'm with Strat and DcT in that I do think KD missed the mark here on that song, almost completely. The initial impression is that it's an anti-religious rant (which I've got little patience for), given the opening lyric. It's a song about needing to take responsibility for the world and our place in it, and goes after people too complacent to care, too afraid of rocking the boat to recognize that obligation. In fact, the references to god are not attacks on religion as much as they are about learned helplessness. I can't do anything to fix things myself so I'm going to wait for someone else to come along and do it. And the self realized/metaphysically redeemed part is also sarcastic--that people who retreat into themselves in times that require solidarity and a call to arms are not to be respected.
And "this world's a long love letter that makes me want to cry" is a fantastic lyric.

I actually think MYM is one of their more sophisticated songs. There's a lot going on in it.

Re: Division 4 Round 3av: Mind Your Manners vs. Infallible
I get what you're saying, but the song never expands its "learned helplnessness" idea beyond the specificity of religion, so in effect, it is just an anti-religion song. There's never any lyric in the song that supports "I can't do anything to fix things myself so I'm going to wait for someone else to come along and do it." - everything is specified to God and the afterlife. You're projecting a broader message than what is actually in the song.stip wrote:I'm with Strat and DcT in that I do think KD missed the mark here on that song, almost completely.
