They started out as straight up parodies of fantasy, but evolved a very human and often dark touch. I always recommend people start with Guards! Guards! and read the City Watch series in order. it's very sharp social satire and wonderful stories that are funny as hell. Or it turns into that about 6-7 books into the series (which had about 40)
