Kiss Me, Judas by Will Christopher Baer

An ex-cop/mental patient meets a beautiful prostitute in a hotel bar. He takes her to his room and then...hours later, he wakes up in a bathtub full of ice. His side is stapled shut. He's missing a kidney. And he's pissed off. That's the set-up of this brilliantly written nightmarish thriller. It's loaded with twisted humor and is just really cool.

wow, perfect timing! I was in the stacks at the library not twenty minutes ago trying to come up with the name of this book. I didn't feel like making a fool of myself and saying to the librarian, "I'm looking for a book. It's written by a woman, there's an alligator on the cover, and I think the name sounds like Portlandia. Do you have that?" I ended up taking A Visit from the Goon Squad. oh well, next time.

I read that a few months ago and was so-so on it. Interesting stuff near the end, didn't like it as much as "Look at Me," but had some cool parts.

There are a couple of narrative threads in Swamplandia, and I'm into some more than others, but overall i likey.

the only literature that's worth reading is about the bravery of men at sea, with only scurvy and male companionship to shepherd their paths into the ineffable void

I really enjoy books about human endurance. It really is amazing what people can overcome when they don't really have a choice.
