While far from an easy decision, I don't have any regrets voting for Immortality.

Love both songs, and in a battle this close, I'm going with particulars, and one thing I particularly love about DTE is Jack's use of a trash can lid. This is tipping my decision to DTE.

Immortality. I liked the MTV music video better for that one.

the word vey?
vitalogy being the best album?
or that I don't acknowledge the song that comes after immortality when you play the record?

You can't just ignore the last song and say the penultimate song closes the album. You might not like it, you may disagree with the sequencing decisions made, you may not even listen to the last song, but there's no grey area here.

I think I did it the first time I heard the record and one other time. That's it.EJ wrote:only a crazy person would listen to that song after Immortality
I've listened to it since on a number of occasions, but never after immortality. Just isn't right.

Re: interdivision round of 16: Do the Evolution v. Immortali
I like Immortality a lot, but I never find myself reaching for it. It's one of many very good PJ ballads from their first ten years. But DTE...I hadn't really ever heard them try anything like that before or since. It could have gone so poorly, and as a song, they absolutely nail it. It has one of my favorite Stone riffs and one of my favorite Ed vocals. Immortality makes me feel sad by the end of it, but by the end of Evolution, especially on Yield, it sounds like the world's about to end. It's a deceptively ambitious song, to me at least.hlniv wrote:Immortality easily.
I never quite understood why DTE became some PJ anthem type song. It's good, I enjoy it, it rocks- stone is awesome, I understand.
But a song like Immortality embodies what I love about PJ (well, used to love) - rawness, intimacy in the face of grandeur, extended instrumentation, plus it closes what is vey clearly the best PJ album.
Plus, it reminds me of my grandfather for some reason, he died around the time that I got really into PJ, and I can't help but think of him when I hear this. Not really so much for the lyrics, but the general theme and the overall feel of an ongoing presence.
Anyhoo- Immortality easily for me
This makes it sound like I think Immortality's bad or has any problems, and I don't. PJ had very few bad notes up through their tenth year together.

Re: interdivision round of 16: Do the Evolution v. Immortali
DTe always struck me as a bit awkward and clumsy, especially with Ed trying to preach his way through it. Not much, mind you, I still like it, but to me its not even the best song of its kind on Yield. Its kind of an ugly combination of some of PJ's best and worst instincts, but its still fun.
Like hlniv said, Immortality just embodies PJ for me, and the solo (and most of its live variations) is just crushing. I may not always reach for it, because frankly its goddamn depressing, but when I do, it stops me in my tracks.
and Chud is clearly wrong.

I am glad "Immortality" doesn't embody Pearl Jam for me because I would not like Pearl Jam very much
