And it wasn't just you.PHATJ wrote:Maybe not so much today, but the last couple with the endless complaining about the format.cutuphalfdead wrote:Has my tone really been bitchy today? One of "us" put this thing together. One of "us" spent a lot of their hard earned free time to do something designed to bring fun to the group. It just seems petty and ungrateful to nit pick the efforts of someone that was only trying to bring us all some enjoyment. That's all. I appreciate his efforts, I thought the new format was fun and I didn't find it nearly as confusing and befuddling as you and some others may have. Constructive criticism is one thing, you just seem to be coming across as a bit needlessly bitchy.cutuphalfdead wrote:This is what I don't understand. We're all here, we're all posting, we're all voting in a really silly march madness bracket tournament of Pearl Jam songs. Think about that for a minute. To put yourself on a high horse because you spend your time here with a positive opinion instead of a negative one seems pretty arbitrary. It doesn't take me any more time to complain about something on the board, my time here is going to be pretty much the same regardless if my opinion of something is negative or positive.PHATJ wrote:Anyone bitching about any of this has way too much time on their hands.
Also, isn't this a better place if there are some constructive disagreements? If everyone just posts "hey this is awesome" it'll get lame pretty fast and there won't be any room to make something better because we've already accepted it's perfect as is.

Last Exit and DTE are both equal in greatness. But if DTE and Release were up against each other, which would be better? Why so few votes? 62?

So uh, which song should I vote for? Both songs represent PJ at their best, in their best stretch. I think I kinda like Last Exit better, but I have an irrational love for Jack Irons, and I'd like a song he was on to win. When do the polls close? I may have to find some live recordings with Jack on both songs to determine a winner.

Re: 2015 Finals: Last Exit vs. Do The Evolution
I listened to the studio versions of both of these this morning. It's close. In the end I think there is a purity to Last Exit that puts it over the edge. It sounds like someone ripping open their own chest to expose their still beating heart--a desperate attempt to excise some kind of cancerous growth. There's something so matter of fact about the whole pained enterprise that utterly strips it of the melodrama you'd expect from this kind of song. Utterly authentic.
DTE is an extremely clever song, though as I've expanded my own horizons not quite as clever lyrically as I once thought it was, and in typical eddie fashion there are a few clunky moments scattered throughout. And while there are moments in DTE that I probably like more than any one moment in Last Exit (the hallalujah sequence and transition into the next verse, the really funky bit that stone plays after the first chorus) there is also a sense of artifice to the song that last exit doesn't have. This isn't really a complaint per se, because it's all extremely well done, and sincerity doesn't have any intrinsic value (Future Days is totally sincere, if nothing else). But Last Exit is one of those very rare songs that probably is perfect through and through.

I just love how perfectly captured Ed's vocals are in this song. One standout vocal in particular: "Let the ocean swell, dissolve 'way my past." There's such beautiful harmonics to Ed's delivery here, gets me every time.

Voting for DTE but it hardly feels like a loss if Last Exit wins it all. Both of these songs are worthy of the trophy.
Stip, as always, this was a ton of fun! Thank you SO MUCH for putting this thing together. Again. I genuinely look forward to this every single year. And this year did not disappoint. I really enjoyed the divisions this year. It really did liven up the voting and the discussions. Kudos to you, my friend. A really wonderful move to mix things up.
Thanks RM!

Evolution, but there are very few songs that are on such a similar level. This could just as easily be Last Exit on a different day.
