Maybe Ed shouldn't write anything on the next record and just sing.
Both of Moonlander songs sounded really good, and im sure i will love Stone´s new record, but i just listened to Backspacer and its fuckin good too....i do believe they should have release another record in the middle.

I'll praise the lyrics--they're just what this song needs. "Honeymoon, or a moon landing?" That's actually kind of hilarious--the kind of thing only a guy like Stone could deliver with a straight face.
Stone can get away with stuff as a solo artist that he could never begin to pull off with Pearl Jam (probably true of all of the band members, to a degree), and this is one of those songs. I'm on my third listen and think it's great.

As opposed to something that sounds concise and compact like Backspacer. The inference being that something that has that expansive sound is better. That's what I'm interpreting from all this talk about missing certain guitar tones and stuff from PJ. Personally I think it's just a difference in approach, not something necessarily better or worse.
Maybe opinions on music are inherently subjective and people just respond to different things? Crazy, I know.
Not bad so far but hardly essential listening. Honeycomb Different has some nice guitar sounds that remind me of the early QOTSA EPs/singles. And I wanted Moonlander to shift up a gear. On 2nd listen it's a nice grower, great sounds. Get your fuckin laser on.
Different is Cameron on drums for sure. Moonlander Not. Maybe Chamberlain.

My inference was that Backspacer exhibits many turd-like qualities.
While a Western guitar motif lost on the swings drum bass fusion, get your own thoughts into the subconscious often forgotten. "Pendulum" is a sweeping soul from the ballast.
If Stone gave I Need Something Different to PJ and it ended up on Backspacer, this board would be shitting all over it. It would get more abuse than The Fixer.

Well I, for one, appreciate you telling me how I'd feel about something I've never heard.

You're welcome. It's not hard to figure out the general consensus of this board's taste though.
"This board" is not a single sentient entity, it's a collection of individuals-- individuals with often differing opinions, as the last couple of pages have shown. And based on the relative popularity of a quirky, chunky song like "Black, Red, Yellow" (while having its share of detractors), I'm going to say I disagree that a PJ version of Stone's song would necessarily be panned. But we'll never know.

Beyond that (and here's where the long delay between albums gets frustrating) Backspacer and S/T were each designed to be records that sounded a certain way. S/T was raw, aggressive, immediate, abrasive (look at how a great song like parachutes seems out of place on that album--I'm glad they included it but it doesn't belong). S/T was written to be quick, weightless, unburdened. Certain songs just wouldn't fit on it. People seem to accept this general premise in the 'would Merkin Ball sound good on No Code' thread but forget it here.

Mostly true.

But you can think of a possibility, right? And a song like " i need..." in the context of Backspacer has the possibility of sounding mostly like a song this board dont like.
Fuzzcharger wrote:Are people that desperate for new PJ related material? These songs are solid tunes but that's about it.
These two songs have been more exciting to me than the first glimpses we got of S/T and Backspacer. Now I love both of those albums. Especially Backspacer. I'm much more on Stip's side of the spectrum when it comes to that album and I don't apologize for it.
But these two new Stone tracks, tracks that I didn't know were in the works and came out of nowhere, are really striking a nerve with me. They're exciting. They're eliciting a visceral response. It has nothing to do with expectation or desperation for new material. The music is just hitting for me.
