I was trying to explain this to my wife at dinner the other night. She hasn't even seen the original trilogy from start to finish (she falls asleep-if disney releases the theatrical cuts I may make her watch them). And she's never seen me obsess much about star wars. And I don't. I don't give a shit about the extended universe, think the prequels sucked, and rarely talk about it anymore. Yet I found myself tearing up at that moment in the first teaser trailer when we see the falcon and hear the music, and I was telling her that when the opening crawl starts half the theater (certainly anyone it over the age of 30) will probably start to cry.

There's just something so foundational about star wars if you're past a certain age. I've compared it to the Iliad and the oddesy in that regard. It's where I learned what my imagination is and how to use it, and there's always been a part of me that yearns to recover and return to it.

What is going to be irritating is that I'll have to wait for weeks to see this because the theater will be full of weirdos. Then, when I do see it, I'll inevitably sit next to the guy who has already seen it 5 times and will keep saying crap like "oh here comes that awesome part".

Yeah, I'm definitely going to wait several weeks before going to see it. If I can help it, I'll try to go about a week before it leaves the theaters before they (inevitably) bring it back again in May.

That experience just doesn't exist here. Sure I could find a cushy 50-seater that costs me $30 a pop plus a 2 drink minimum but it's still gonna be full of people on their phones and talking to the screen and asking their companion what somebody just said at the top of their voice.

In my home town, there was one gloriously run-down place that nobody went to, yet somehow stayed in business from before I was born, till I left. Max 10 people in a 200-seater venue on any weekday after opening weekend. London doesn't have any of those :/
