In the comic book series this is 'loosely' based a nuke goes off which blocks out the sun, greatly weakening superman. This helps keep the fight from being absurd. Also Batman has a suit lined with some special kryptonite he's been developing for years.

Yeah the whole premise is absurd.
But I do like the sun being blocked out thing. That's actually a good way to deal with Supes.

Agreed. All of these are reasons why it was a self contained story though.
It also takes place in a dystopic version of Reagan's America. The political climate of the Cold War played a big part in it, so it really wouldn't work if they took that approach.

Yep. So I imagine lex luthor does something to sap a good bit of Superman's power in this version. And this is suppose to be the launching point for the justice league so maybe the two team up at the end. #notsure

Well, there's also people calling him the devil, crowds chanting "GO HOME!" and a statue defaced with the words "FALSE GOD." I think the jury's still out on Supes.
