Early on in listening to the 3-LP edition: it sounds good, but I think I prefer the Albini mix. But I'll listen to them basically back-to-back to be sure.

I have both. An original press In Utero and the Albini mix. Didn't feel compelled to get to re purchase the 45 rpm version, cause I think it sounds just fine. I think if I only had to choose it it would be the original version, just cause thats what the band originally intended. Steve's mix is fantastic and a nice bonus. I wouldn't call it essential, but its very tastefully done, sounds great, and makes for a interesting listen.

Albini has made the case that the original release is what the record company wanted, not necessarily the band's vision, but I guess there are conflicting reports (Albini is so anti-major-labels that he might be embellishing a bit). A big reason why I got the 3-LP set too was for the b-sides; still trying to find a reasonably priced Nevermind deluxe, and it wasn't until recently that I found out a deluxe Bleach actually existed!

I thought it was only really the "singles" (HSB and AA) that were not Albini mixes on the original release because there weren't any obvious hits. But maybe there was something more done to all the tracks?

I actually have a 2003 EU pressing that appears to be "original" with the normal cover but HSB and AA are clearly the Albini versions with the fuzzier guitar leads.

Little things here and there. Sounds like there's a droning guitar or maybe a bass higher up in the register through out the verses on "all apologies" that i'd never heard. Another obvious one is the intro to "Very Ape." Sounds like one guitar is doing the normal intro riff and the other one is just kinda spazzy and noisy sounding. IT was shockingly different.

That and the strings on Tourettes are a surprise.

So the "2013 Mix" is the "Albini Mix," right?

Yeah, the version that was released in 94, is pretty much all Steve sans the singles. But for the reissue, the band gave Steve free reign to pretty much remix the entire album, and thats the new "2013 Mix/Albini Mix". I don't think he touched much if any of the original version aside from a remaster.

The 03 was a weird, I think German, press that had the original un remixed version of HSB and AA.

I'll make it my next purchase. I struggled because I wasn't sure how much it really mattered or whatever. But it sounds like a pretty great release. And it's one of my all time favorite albums.

Speaking of Nearvarnah I just ordered this. Not big on cover/tribute records, but I like enough of the artists to give it a chance. Plus, I'm dying to hear Thou play Endless.
