It wasn't that it was too abrasive, and I really like the production. It just doesn't hit the spot for me at all. I think the quality of the songs reflect their "leftover" and "written under duress" nature. It's like they really wanted to do stuff like "Oh The Guilt" and "Curmudgeon" but they played it safe and used songs that had enough commerciality to satisfy the record company. It's a compromise that fails to satisfy because the quality of the songs just isn't there. The best song on the album is probably "Scentless Apprentice", which is based on a group jam. I think "Moist Vagina" and "Sappy" are both better than anything that made the actual album. But as far as I was concerned at the time, stuff like "Dumb" and "Tourettes" and "Rape Me" was played out shit...those songs were ancient news already...about 2 years too late. And I think a lot of people felt the same way, and were ready to move on. The general mood of the album was also a bummer and I don't think people were really in that headspace at the time.
I miss the comfort in being sad.
I miss the lack of judgemental condemnation that people used to have towards musicians from 20 years or so ago

My dad won't let me play anything from the fab 4 post Beatles. I kicked off band on the run last night and he said, "shut it off, pecker-head."

That first year or so following Dave joining the band definitely seems in retrospect like the best of times for the band.

Agreed... and it's one of the few that are way better live... :bammer:
I would argue that, other than "Swap Meet" and "Heart-Shaped Box", they're all better live.

As you, me and Spenno know well, this is widely acknowledged to be the best Nirvana show ever. I've listened to this show so many times over the years and it never gets old. I've been looking for the Portland New Year's Eve show (12/31/1990) ever since I moved to Portland and the widespread belief here is that, if there's a tape, it's long since disappeared.

Lame.

Yes. I've listened to every Nirvana show out there (I got my start in the online Nirvana bootleg world) and in general I prefer live Nirvana to studio Nirvana.

Another song that was better in the studio: "Even In His Youth".

What would you say is their best live song... and best live boot? My favorite video boot is the infamous Trees show for obvious reasons, but now that there are officially released shows, I don't ever visit the old audio boots. I do have a lot on CD-R, but haven't listened to them in a while.

I'm not wild about it either. I still find it very lacking in the songwriting department. The general feeling at the time amongst me and my friends was that it was a major let down/bummer. It was very anti-climactic. A lot of people were more interested in the new Pearl Jam album, which was without a doubt a better album.

However, the "In Utero" tour was the first (and last) time a lot of people in the USA were able to see Nirvana live. My first concert ever was the Bethlehem stop. And "Unplugged" and "Live And Loud" were wildly popular when they first aired...at a time when Pearl Jam wasn't doing shit in terms of media appearances. So that era is not at all lost, despite my lukewarm feelings about the album itself.
I think I had a silver disc boot of that show back in grade school -- "Legacy of Noise" I think it was called? The sound quality wasn't great but man I played the shit out of that thing back in the day.

To me it's "Drain You", which is a monster live. There aren't any bad versions, and it's one of the few songs that continued to be great all the way to the very end.

By some miracle, it's the most-covered "In Utero" show, with 2 audios & 3 videos. "Why?" is anybody's guess.

So, Montage of Heck is pretty great but it really made me dislike Kurt even more. Seems like he never grew out of his angry 12 year old self and always pretty much acted like a child.

And good lord I cant stand Courtney Love.

Kurt exhibited signs of Serial Killer in his youth. Good thing he picked up a guitar. This whole "id abort christ for you" is just weird. Granted i wasnt a huge Nirvana Fan but i think its part in fact that I couldnt relate to kurt at all because I felt he never really emotionally grew past the age of 15.
