Generally speaking. Not to say that sort of thing never registers with me at all, but overall it doesn't really matter to me how any given song or album is an extension of its creator's personal life. I mean, maybe you get some insight into what individual lyrics refer specifically to, but on the whole it's not really a meaningful part of the experience for me.

I must not be expressing myself very well.

All I mean to say is that the biographical details of artists -- i.e. Kurt and Courtney's sex life, their difficulty parenting their child as heroin addicts, their childhood issues -- are usually not deciding factors in the way I process their music. I spent 4-5 years listening to Nirvana's music before I really knew anything at all about Kurt Cobain, apart from the fact that he killed himself. As a result, my experience with his songs is almost entirely linked to whatever dramas were unfolding in my own life during that era; it's not as though, once I learned that Kurt Cobain dated one of the members of Bikini Kill, my entire perception of "Drain You" was upended, suddenly "enhanced" by my newfound awareness of some detail that had always been 100% irrelevant to my relationship with the song. I suppose I figure that whatever happened in the life of the artist leading up to the creation of the song is his own business, and after that the song becomes mine to adapt for my own life however best suits me.

Which is precisely the kind of egocentric thinking that would compel someone to write a memoir about music. :)

yeah he and Kurt were probably made for each other. I doubt many other people would want to hang around them for long.

I think Noveselic seems like a really awesome guy. When he's not around Kurt. I think he felt really intimidated around him and shifted his personality a lot to impress Kurt.

Good guy sure. A bit neurotic? Totally. Most famous people are to an extent.

I think the Duffy's and Blind Pig bootlegs from 1990 are the definitive live Nirvana documents. From their early days, anyway.

I was not able to make it last night to the show. My buddy recorded some of it. If I get my hands on it I will post.

I watched it yesterday and thought it was great. They did a good job of bringing his scribbles and doodles to life, and telling the story of Kurt through his journals. It makes it very personal and autobiographical.

As someone who lived through the Nirvana craze, loved the band, idolized the man, and was crushed by his death, I found this to be a perfect portrait or window into who he was. It doesn't change my relationship with the music, however by the time Kurt was singing the last chorus of Where did you Sleep Last night, a performance I have seen countless times, I had tears welling in my eyes.

I agree completely... very tastefully done in parts, uncomfortable in parts, and swings emotions like a pendulum throughout. I, too, was caught up in the craze circa 1993/1994, and was devastated when Kurt killed himself. It was a teenage idolization thing for me, and with age I've since seen the forest for the trees. I think this is the first time I've ever heard Frances Bean speak on the matter, and she did it perfectly... behind the scenes. She had executive control of this movie, and I tend to believe that we saw everything she wanted us to see, how she wanted us to see it. unglorified, undignified, and as another human who was flawed (we all are)...

I'll never watch it again, but I feel fortunate that it was created and that I was able to see it.

It felt very broad strokes to me and did little to reveal the depth of the man. There was very little in the doc that we didn't already know. It felt like a two-disc greatest hits with two new bonus tracks. I thought they relied way too heavily on the animated notebooks, especially in the final hour. The ending felt rushed, which is odd for such a long film. And, yeah, the Courtney interview (she's CLEARLY lying) right into Where Did You Sleep was a fucking gut punch. That was awesome.

I'm glad I saw it and it definitely hit some powerful notes here and there. At least it got me listening to Nirvana again.

I miss Kurt.
