my friend mike sheerin was one of the main chefs at blackbird. he opened a trendy place north of the city called the trencherman, and just opened a gig in the west loop called embeya (which is "progressive Asian" (like buggy)).
Does Progressive Asian = Asian Fusion?
not really: http://www.embeya.com/menus.html#dinner

Here or Gibson's?
unless you're into prostitutes, do not go to Gibson's -- it's an overrated chain.
I didn't know it was a chain. I've seen it in The League.
it's not a huge chain, but i think they have like 3 or 4 locations. every time i've eaten there, i've had an overpriced, usually over cooked, steak (plus, i don't like where they source their steaks from). the one downtown is in what's called "the viagra triangle." lots of suits looking for "high-end" hookers.

i always laughed when they showed it on The League.
I will skip this now.

I might check this out for the Octopus. Reasonably priced too.

where in chicago will you be? what kind of food to do you want? what is your price point? attire? large groups? solo?
I'm staying near the Loop. Any. Any. Casual. Solo.
get the kobe burger at rockit bar and grill on hubbard. when else are you going to pay $20 for a burger unless it's on the company dime?
Is this the best burger in america place?
it's maybe the best burger i've ever had. and yeah, don't go to gibson's.

yeah, the fact that they don't take reservations is a deal breaker for me (when i had it, we lucked out and waited only 25 minutes)

What about Kuma's? I read that's one of the best burgers in america.

it's gotten a lot of overhype in the past 5 years or so, and it's probably impossible to match that hype. kuma's is good to be sure. but it's pretty far northwest of the city, and the wait can be atrocious as well.

i've only been once, but i consider it overrated. the burger patty itself was nothing special imo, i think it's all about the toppings.

tom, go to Portillo's for chicago-style hot dogs and italian-beef sandwiches. it's just north of the loop.

I had that last time I was in Chicago. I want to try all new places, but I am tempted to go back to Shaw's.
