Sunburn is another one of those songs that I don't understand why people really love. As per that other thread, I wonder if I'd enjoy it more if Stone wasn't singing on it.

People like it because it's a sweet, unpretentious song with a nice melody and really placid, relaxed playing. It's pleasant to listen to. I don't think it's a great song, but I really enjoy it.stip wrote:Sunburn is another one of those songs that I don't understand why people really love. Why are there pics of Ed on the Sunburn video?
Anyway, I've always liked Sunburn and its a perfect example of the type of song I would like to see the band work on at this stage of their career. What I remember about being a fan post Binaural and pre Riot Act was noticing things like Stone releasing Bayleaf and the Ed uke performances from the Wiltern show in 2002 and being really excited. Riot Act was okay, and seemed to reinforce the feeling that the band was searching for a path to allow them to age gracefully. By the time 2006 rolled around it felt like they had given up that search. Self titled had its moments but ends up sounding like a semi lame stab at 'a return to form' for me. Backspacer was worse: the sound of a band losing the plot.
When I hear songs like Sunburn it just reminds me of what could have been if these guys stayed the course...

Thanks Kev.
Wow. First I thought it was a joke. But then it was sort of interesting. And then it moved into a too obviously PJ sound/structure, if that makes sense?
I'm not sure what record it was demo'd for but I don't think it's a huge loss. I feel like they've done this sort of thing before and done it better than this. That said I can't name the songs it reminds me of. It's very generic pj.
Stones voice turns me off though. Almost always. Could be that.

I really like Sunburn; I do especially love the electric work on the song, the dissonant notes that start to appear in the chorus as the song goes on, and the solo (although whoever's playing it is really just doing swells).

Re: No Code / Merkinball -- Rewriting History
It does have that strange turn in the melody like Thin Air and All or none, but I just don't find it interesting. Sorry. Matters wouldn't be much improved with ed singing on this either. He's not as good as coming from under the melody in Stones songs, as Stone is.stip wrote:it's a very stone sounding chorusdimejinky99 wrote:Kevin Davis wrote:Check it out:dimejinky99 wrote:That does look good.
