Okay, take the version on this comp, swap out Eddie's too-clean acoustic with his Dead Man tone electric, and swap out the 7 worst lyrical lines with something actually good. Then, maybe?AndySlash wrote:nothing can help that song

At the risk of looking like I'm fishing for compliments, anyone else give this a spin?
I'd love to hear what you thought of the selections, good, bad or indifferent.

Excellent!
I really thought the band (and Ed) sounded much better on this run than they have in a number of years, hence the two-disc mix. For once, I felt like almost every show had any number of performances that I wouldn't mind hearing again. Good stuff.

hey spen, I appreciate you sending me this and the work you put in but I just can't get past ed's voice. I made it through about 3 or 4 full songs. doesn't help that I'm going through the 2006 u.s. shows right now where he sounds so much better.

Yeah, I can appreciate how Ed's aged voice could be something a listener simply couldn't get past - though these were the good performances...
Thanks anyway, I'm always glad to know somebody gave it a spin (even if it was without much joy).

I've been digging on this mix a bit the last 2 weeks thanks Spenno. I thought all the performances were pretty good. One thing I've noticed when listening to these comps is when you go back and hear a single show in its entirety it's generally a bit of a let down because some of the songs can vary so much depending on how long since they played them last and how rehearsed the song is.

Cheers! Yeah, I agree - the individual shows have been very hit-and-miss (occasionally more miss than hit) over the last few years.
One of the things that prompted me to make mixes like this was to have something I could reliably throw on if I felt like listening to some recent Pearl Jam live material and not have to wade through the inconsistencies of a full show. Now I've made this, I can't really imagine I'm going to revisit those individual 2014 shows very often if at all.

Finally working my way through this, spenno. I know for certain i can't stand that version of "of the girl"
What is mike doing? Total guitar masturbation. No subtlety. Its like the entire band was bored to death of the song and tried to outplay each other.

Ha! Well, I liked it (obviously).
I think I'm more inclined these days to extend the band a fair bit of leeway in how they interpret songs for the stage, particularly softer songs like Of the Girl where a hushed, downbeat performance might not necessarily suit where it was placed in the set.
I kind of like that song as a bluesy stomp, I have to admit. My expectations might be different at an acoustic show where something more subdued would be called for.

I've always thought of the girl was better when it was funkier and looser. Like Lisa Ann after a 6 man gangbang. That being said, I think the band have always used the song as a calm before the store song for most of the time it's played.

True Story-
I sat next to Lisa Ann on a flight from Orange Co to Vegas 2-3 years ago. We chatted about movies and basketball the entire time, and it wasn't until the last 10 minutes of the flight until I realized who she was. This was about 10 minutes after I stopped listening to her and starting only thinking about fucking her. I was conflicted in my opinion as we de-planed. Seemed a lot full of herself, but that only made it more interesting
She was going to Vegas to shoot a reality TV pilot about a house party (or something) with Bret Michaels. Clearly, that didn't pan out.

As always, much appreciated, and awesome work, Spenno. I really dig hearing some later, more polished versions of Lightning Bolt tunes.Birds in Hell wrote:At the risk of looking like I'm fishing for compliments, anyone else give this a spin?

Of the Girl, Swallowed Whole, and Sometimes stand out thus far.

Damn, the encore starting at Sleeping By Myself onward is really great. Ed actually sounds wonderful as well. This is the kind of music they need to focus on in order to grow and let these talents shine. parachutes and come back are great.

19. Parachutes
20. Nothing As It Seems
21. Come Back
22. Future Days
23. Sleight of Hand
24. Given to Fly
25. Lightning Bolt
26. Porch
While I do really like most of these songs, Pearl Jam doing this all the time would probably bore the fuck outta me. I gotta rock!

I wish that they start playing Sleight of Hand in full electric guitar mode. The sit down versions seem to lack the power of all that great guitar sound crashing over Ed's vocals.
