Let's say.... .5 per season on average. At 10 episodes a season, you do the math.LoathedVermin72 wrote:what's the average number of rapes per episode on this show

is that one rape every two seasons, or is there such a thing as a half rape?durdencommatyler wrote:Let's say.... .5 per season on average. At 10 episodes a season, you do the math.LoathedVermin72 wrote:what's the average number of rapes per episode on this show

Some politicians grandstanding and then toss in our culture and bam! we have controversy. I agree, I didn't think much of the scene in regards to it going too far. It is, after all, a fantasy world.@SkitchP wrote:durdencommatyler wrote:And yet still nowhere near as awful as the book version.spike wrote:that ending was a bit much
Yeah, i don't get the uproar over this. Its established that Ramsey Snow is a crazy, ruthless type guy. It's not glorified or presented as a positive thing, instead it reinforces how terrible he, and the Boltons, are. And frankly, for a show that has been very graphic in the past with sexual violence and murders, this was pretty tame by comparison.

Dany's arc after her rape in Season 1 was more troubling, I think. But there wasn't as much exposure for the series back then.

Also, what if rape on tv is hard to watch because it's a horrible thing in real life? I think people have a hard time separating that depiction is not glorification.Chris_H_2 wrote:i think people feel especially uncomfortable with this one because it's sansa -- someone who has literally grown up before our eyes and whom we've known since she was still a kid. there's an extra emotional attachment at play.@SkitchP wrote:durdencommatyler wrote:And yet still nowhere near as awful as the book version.spike wrote:that ending was a bit much

Speaking as someone who hasn't watched this show past the pilot and doesn't really know much about the criticisms, are people actually saying that this show glorifies rape? Or are they criticizing that it exploits and relies upon rape as a misogynistic narrative tool?

Although, I have to say, it rubs me the wrong way when people react to the reaction by saying, "That's how life was in the Middles Ages." Fool, marital rape is a thing that happens every day in 2015--I think both Martin and B+W are doing way more than showing "how it used to be."

More so the latter, definitely. I've seen some people put their grievances very elegantly, and I think the better ones have saddled their criticisms with "we'll sees"--that is, it's more about what happens next, about how the aftermath of the rape is depicted. I.e., whether it's just used for "shock value" or for actual character building.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Speaking as someone who hasn't watched this show past the pilot and doesn't really know much about the criticisms, are people actually saying that this show glorifies rape? Politicians grandstanding over a sexual assault scene in a fantasy tv series really brings game of thrones full circle.

Rarely does the word misogyny come up when talking about rape and Game of Thrones. That's not really what people take issue with. It's more the detractors feel it's irresponsible to use rape as shock value with no concern for real life implications and/or fictional consequences.
If they had done the scene exactly as it's described in the book people would have completely lost their minds. Because one major factor of this seems to be divergence from the source material. Same with last seasons perceived rape scene.

That one I understood the outrage. That was a character we are kinda supposed to have some affection for, despite prior bad acts. But beyond throwing Bran out a window he had mostly been portrayed as a good guy on the wrong side. Ramsey is and always had been a sadistic fuck. I don't think illustrating his brutality is particularly shocking.

You're making their point for them, then. That rape should only be shock value, which I disagree with.@SkitchP wrote:durdencommatyler wrote:Same with last seasons perceived rape scene.

I'm still not comfortable calling last season's scene a rape scene and neither are the show runners nor the actors involved. But that aside, who cares whether or not the character is supposed to be likable or not. That shouldn't change or alter the atrocity of the act.
Rape is okay when I guy I'm supposed to hate does it. But when it's a guy I kinda like, hey now! That's over the line! I can't get on board with that.

but that's just it, we're already well aware of how terrible ramsey is, so it seemed like overkill.@SkitchP wrote:durdencommatyler wrote:Same with last seasons perceived rape scene.

There's more to the scene though. It should also affect how you feel about Theon and Sansa (in different ways obviously). But that wasn't just one more scene about how awful Ramsay is. That's only one color.spike wrote:but that's just it, we're already well aware of how terrible ramsey is, so it seemed like overkill.@SkitchP wrote:durdencommatyler wrote:Same with last seasons perceived rape scene.
