Hanley went full Manny on that play off the wall. You never go full Manny.

Ninth time this month (50% of the games) that the Sox have scored either one or zero runs.

So Hanley Ramirez suddenly got pretty bad at baseball, didn't he?

I was talking more about him being possibly the worst baserunner and defensive player in baseball right now. It's possible that the injury has affected those things, but he was just as bad at them in April, too.

Hanley played 1,037 games before this season started, and zero of them were the in the outfield. We can only hope it gets better from here. I haven't watched enough games in his career to know whether the baserunning boners are anything new.

I assumed he was always a bad baserunner, and as bad as he is in the OF it is new to him.

He had a few years where he was outstanding on the bases followed by a few years around league average. This year he's been a disaster, apparently. It's certainly possible that he was always a bad/mediocre baserunner but that he was just really, really fast, so he could outrun any poor decisions he made.

Being new to the outfield definitely comes with an adjustment period, and making that adjustment in Fenway can't be easy, but the little that I've seen hasn't been pretty, and the stats suggest he's been abysmal.

I know he's not actually this bad though. I only made the original post because I was shocked that, despite all the early home runs and a wRC+ that, despite the injury, still stands at a very good 120, Fangraphs has him at -0.4 fWAR.

Hypothetically if Papi retires at the end of the year (not that he needs to but he is 39 and his contact is up I believe at end of year) Hanley can DH. Hanley's bat is obviously still potent.

I don't see Ortiz retiring with 500 HRs still within reach.

He hasn't hit at all since he jammed his shoulder a few weeks ago, that's got to have hurt his WAR also. I mean he's bad in LF, but I feel like by the end of the year he'll be able to be at least as good as Manny was out there.

True. He would need to pick it up but he has a shot this year. If not he will next year.

I wanna say he needs 34 this year off the top of my head, I think he falls just shy this year.
