And Machina II is better than Machina by a long shot. It's a shame that the records got so butchered, and it's a shame that the Machina reissue has been shelved for the time being because done properly that album is a masterpiece.i got bugs wrote:Machina is def underrated.. But Machina is very solid. "The Everlasting Gaze" and (especially) "Stand Inside Your Love" are phenomenal songs, some of SP's best.

So this is basically the first show of the Machina era (Jimmy's first show back, during the last tour of the original lineup), a super-unique all acoustic show that is wonderful to listen to, and the penultimate show of the band's career and one of their best shows ever.
All three of these are fantastic in their different ways. This was such an amazing band when they were on...and it's a shame they weren't on more often. I love the Machina era but it takes work to really appreciate it.

The main electric set of 11/29/2000 is one of the greatest things ever. It's balls to the wall intense Smashing Pumpkins all the way through, with a great setlist and absolutely monstrous performances of basically every song.VinylGuy wrote:Thanks Matt. .i will download these..im happy i feel im finally "getting" machina. Yeah, im getting that one first. Heavy Metal Machine is basically one of my favorites Sp songs right now...specially after the intense version i saw on Lollapalooza. Im warmer with Billy after all this years, and even if the body of work he have right now is not that good, there are still cool things there.matt reeder wrote:The main electric set of 11/29/2000 is one of the greatest things ever. Re: generic smashing pumpkins thread
Every band should find their fan like you Matt and give them access to bootlegs and a spot on the band's website. Matt you have done more for opening my eye's to SP than anything else I've run across. I would visit the SP website every day if you had a spot you posted bootlegs and insight on shows, songs and the band. I would not expect you to post every day but would go to the site just knowing when you did post it would be worth my time. And even if I didn't agree with your assessment of a show or album that you at least bring reasoned evaluation to it.matt reeder wrote:The main electric set of 11/29/2000 is one of the greatest things ever. Re: generic smashing pumpkins thread
i saw three shows on that 2000 machina tour, each very different.
first one was early in the tour at the northrop auditorium in minneapolis. i think the tour was just a couple weeks old and they were still finding some of their groove with melissa auf der maur (yum...). after seeing them for the first time in 1998 with over 100,000 people, it was nice to hear them play in a more intimate setting. i was digging hard on glass and the ghost children (still my favorite pumpkins song) and that one popped up early in the set, with tear making an appearance, too. james got to sing a song (blew away), and the band looked like they were enjoying themselves for the most part. we had no clue there was a breakup on the way.
later in the summer, the pumpkins were on the our lady peace curated 'summersault' festival circuit that ran through canadian stadiums. the breakup had been announced, so we thought the winnipeg stop might be our last time seeing them. they only got an hour or so, but it was a pretty tight and fun show, with melissa and james even getting a bit of the spotlight with a human league 'don't you want me' cover in the middle of the set. the sacred and profane had just started popping up in setlists, and my friend was glad to hear that one. drown closed the show and at the time we thought, 'well if that's the last song we hear by them, it's a pretty good one to go out on'.
but, it wasn't the last song we heard. they announced the final shows, and we were lucky to get tix for the united center show in the onsale. we drove through a winter storm to get there. despite missing out on the final show, the united center show has to be considered a pretty solid consolation prize. i'll never forget the frenzy in the crowd when glass' theme went full throttle. my friend, a die hard fan, lost her dad over the summer and so for martha hit home for her. siva and starla hadn't been played very much if at all in the previous years, so those were unexpected highlights. the show is just hot shit. even bullet with butterfly wings has fire to it. if you can't get into this show at all, then the pumpkins probably aren't for you.

I love it. Very intimate look into Billy's songwriting. A lot of good songs came out of that. One of my favorite music docs.VinylGuy wrote:Guys, thoughts on if all goes wrong please.

Its pretty weird...i like the fact that Billy comes like a fucking crazy person, and at times goes by that era, the zeitgeist album...its a strange one.
I appreciate the need he had for new music, the residencys, even the lineup was pretty good.

I saw this in the theater and remember enjoying it, but I was pretty sure I wouldn't hear any of those new songs on an album. What he was searching for just wasn't there. I agree with VinylGuy, strange time to look back on. I'd like to see the movie again.
