Regan Hagar, one of Stone's best, if not the best friend he has, absolutely lays into EdVed and Pearl Jam over Brad stuff from years ago. It's actually pretty harsh. I assume all is well now since he works within the PJ organization, but there was a huge amount of resentment and it was from Stone's best friend. I can only think there was as much, if not even more resentment between Stone himself with Ed. Read the book, it makes it pretty clear that SOMETHING happened in the past, and it was most likely related to Brad. Also, just different approaches to handling success and leadership within the band. I think they are over it but shit sticks around I'm sure. That said, some of the greatest creative relationships are often born out of conflict. I think it's great when they make an effort cause there is a real interesting spark between those two.

bodysnatcher wrote:new article with Stone with some quotes:
I interviewed Stone Gossard earlier this morning and we had a good conversation about his upcoming solo album, Moonlander, which is out June 25. The record is quickly becoming one of my favorite releases among the multitudes of Pearl Jam offshoots and solo projects and if you take a listen to the first two tracks off the album over here you’ll see why. I’ll be posting some of my interview with Stone tomorrow and the rest of the interview as Moonlander‘s release date gets closer, so be on the lookout for that.

Of course I couldn’t talk with Stone and not ask him about Pearl Jam, so I managed to get in a couple of questions about the biggest band in Seattle while I had his ear. There have been various conflicting reports about the state of the band’s highly anticipated 10th studio album. Some reports say seven or eight songs are in the bag, some say the record is coming out this year while others say the record is slated for a 2014 release. I wanted to get some specifics on the album so I asked Stone for an update on the status of the record and what the material that’s been recorded so far sounds like. This is what he had to say:

SG: “It’s almost done and as far as what it sounds like, it sounds like Pearl Jam. You’re going to hear some rock songs and you’re going to hear some quiet songs and you’ll hear some songs in between. That’s all I can really say about it because we aren’t talking about it yet so it doesn’t make much sense for me to say anything.”

I also asked Stone about the band’s upcoming fall tour which is expected to end at the beginning of November when Pearl Jam headlines the New Orleans Voodoo Festival. More specifically, I asked about the prospect of local shows since the band’s absence in Seattle has been something I’ve written about in the past. But instead of asking when the band will play its next show in Seattle, a question I knew Stone wouldn’t answer, I decided to ask about how difficult it is for the band to play hometown shows.

Here’s what I asked Stone and his rather playful responses.

How difficult is it for the band to play Seattle? I assume the band is playing Seattle on its upcoming fall tour.

SG: I hope so. That would be fun. I’d love to do it.

That’s a very sly way of not confirming anything. Seriously though, how difficult is it for the band to play in its hometown?

SG: It’s only difficult in that you know your guest list is going to get out of control (laughs). That’s one of the key things. Seattle has been so good to us. It’s important that we play here. But sometimes it’s fun to go out and focus on the rest of the world and then come back to Seattle and be a regular person. Maybe there’s a little psychological barrier there that might prevent us from doing more hometown shows, but I do believe there’s going to be some coming. I don’t know when, I don’t know the dates or locations but I am optimistic that it’s something that’s going to happen

I know when the band plays in Europe or South America you play in front of 50-70,000 people a night. I imagine that’s what a massive Pearl Jam should would be like in Seattle since there’s so much demand. Because of that demand I would guess it’d be hard to find a venue in Seattle for a show like that.

SG: I don’t know what the demand is. I really don’t. I’d think we’d sell two or three (nights) at the Key maybe, at the most. But I don’t know. Maybe there’s something different that we’re going to do but there are no plans at this point, just a general idea that we do need to play a hometown show.
I think this is the interview that was pulled from: http://www.twistedradio.com/podcasts/BR ... 9_4291.mp3

Stone says "a few weeks" before their done.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Last time I mentioned this here (maybe a year ago?) someone actually typed out the Regan Hagar quotes, so maybe a search will turn something up. But, the gist was Regan had really pinned his hopes on getting something significant going with Brad, this was a guy who was also one of Andy Wood's best friend's and who had hoped to have success with Andy and the rest of the scene in various potential projects. Brad's first album was supposed to be heavily marketed by Sony, and with Ten, there was seriously heavy interest and a hope that they could really break. This was also the peak of EdVed's fame insecurities around 92-93 and basically the band put the kibosh on Sony marketing Brad's first album, feeling like they were just riding PJ's coattails. This basically effected Regan Hagar's entire career and he really was angry that his career didn't take off with Brad and he felt like he missed out on alot of success. He talks about how Stone felt bad about this, but also asked not to say anything to the press about the details. He then goes onto to really rip on EdVed's whole "woe is me" persona and not embracing success. Again, we're talking about Stone's best friend basically, so you're talking about Stone directly being involved in a pretty serious squabble between his band and Brad. The book was written in 2005 I think, since then Regan has been hired on as the band's artisitic designer guy so there probably was some sort of heart to heart where Regan basically needed a job and a way to make a living. That last part is just conjecture on my part. It's only mentioned on 2-3 pages of the book (the rest of the book is about the general scene), but it's illuminating. Stone and Ed are just different types of people and I think they like and respect each other but I think it's more polite between them than a real close friendship. I think they both know that neither would have made it anywhere without the other so they've acknowledged that and kept the working relationship going.

For me, the biggest revelation from the whole PJ20 thing was just how close Ed and Jeff are and how that forms the bond of the band more than anything. People talk about Stone and Jeff, but their relationship is a little bit competitive and I think it's really Ed and Jeff that are the nucleaus and the true force in the band. Stone is sort of the odd duck out.

To blame Eddie for Brad's lack of success is to overestimate Brad's quality. All due respect to Shawn Smith, but of the 38 or so albums he's fronted btw Brad, Satchel, Pigeonhead, and his solo work, none have even cracked a sales chart.

Am I the only one that thinks Hagar was a little misguided in thinking that Brad was going to be some giant breakout band? By definition it was a side project, destined to be in PJ's shadow. And let's face it, there was nothing groundbreaking about what they did where you could see them emerging as a force unto themselves.

I see that, but remember this was back in 1992-93, anything that touched Seattle was gold. A little marketing muscle from Sony probably would have taken Brad much further than it did. But at the end of the day, Regan did come off like the bigger tool, like he expected success to come to him after being around the ground floor with Andy Wood and Stone. I think he basically wanted a big payday with Brad and he felt cheated out of it.

I shouldn't have used the word "quality" because I love Shawn Smith and Brad. I think those albums are everything the artists wanted them to be. Maybe the phrase "popular appeal" would be better.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

ha, i gotcha. I can't stand Shawn Smith's vocals, but I get that a lot of people do. but yeah, it doesn't have "rock radio" written anywhere near it. I heard "The Day Brings" in the grocery store while walking down the cereal aisle once. That seemed like the right environment for his voice. Or maybe a JCPenney dressing room

I think it's great when they make an effort cause there is a real interesting spark between those two.
i'll speak up for the lazy amongst the waves - we ain't reading the book. care to elaborate with more detail?
Cool, thanks. And, I tend to agree with your assessment of their relationship.
I think he basically wanted a big payday with Brad and he felt cheated out of it.
i also think that Regan was talking about other stuff too....not only Sony didnt promote them ( im sure Brad would have been bigger in 1993) but that lack of promotion affected other stuff too, like touring, for example.
And when you know that Pearl Jam was behind that idea, well of course you are going to be mad about it.
I dont know if its all Eds fault, but it was a fucked up thing for sure.

Sorry I don't agree. Pearl Jam in 1992-95 was the biggest rock and roll force on the planet. To think that Brad was going to take off alongside that is ludicrous and shortsighted. Stone was busy making three incredible PJ albums during that period. Brad would have only gotten so much attention anyway.

But you gotta look at that time period, some really crappy bands were startign to make it during this period. Some decent ones, of course, didn't (like Mudhoney or Screaming Tress to a certain extent) but it as a time period where everyone around the scene felt like they had a legit shot.

It may have even been me that typed the quotes out as I know I've brought this up before too.

Regardless of how successful Brad might have become had it actually transpired, bear in mind I'm no great fan either, I think the substance of Regan's complaint was that a big promotional push was actually planned by Sony and promised to the band and then one day it was unexpectedly cancelled. From probing around, Regan was given the impression that certain other members of the band had put pressure on Sony to back off on Brad so as not to take focus away from Pearl Jam.

Personally, I thought it might have been Jeff and not Ed, but who knows (which might fit in with the competitive nature of Jeff and Stone's relationship mentioned above.) In the PJ20 book, they mention that Regan would have tried out for either Mother Love Bone or Pearl Jam (I can't remember which) but it wasn't going to work out as he and Jeff don't get along. Funny that Regan's kind of taken over Jeff's role of being the band's artistic director in recent years.
