I had no idea those three songs went together. What's the story behind that?

They were written together on his boat on the way to Hawaii in 1988. That's the only real tangible connection (ala the three '68 fever songs) but thematically they go together, particularly Sixty To Zero and Ordinary People.
We can only hope we get some live Bluenotes released officially sometime in the next 20 years. Those three tunes were performed regularly on the last leg and are just unreal.

I think the Fillmore version of "Cowgirl" is especially horrible, because the bass is almost a full half step out of tune. I can't believe that Neil even released it.

As far as those Horse 1970 shows go, I'd put the Cincinnati 2-25-70 DBTR at the top. There's a great slow acoustic Old Laughing Lady in that show too.

Hmm, never bothered me, and I've been listening to that thing since I traded for my first Neil cassette bootleg. If that's what you're coming away with you're missing out on some amazing guitar playing from Neil and Danny.
The whole Fillmore performance is pretty out of tune and vocally off key I guess, but if those are qualities necessary to qualify a performance as releasable, we need to throw out Tonight's The Night, On The Beach, ASnB, and I'm sure a slew of others.

I'll have to pull that out and listen again, I remember it being a tough bootleg listen.
I do love the solo sets from that tour. They're distinct from the solo shows he was doing around the same time and should have been included in the Fillmore release.

Yes! I think the El Dorado EP is just fantastic too.

Here's a very nice comp of 80s stuff. It's got Ordinary People, Boxcar and the twenty minute Sixty to Zero.I forgot how great Bad News is as well...

No. I can't think of any Neil Young tunes that are even remotely as out of tune as the Fillmore Cowgirl. In fact, the original producer of the live recordings found it unusable and discarded the mutli-track. The version on the Fillmore release is a rough mix.

The one redeeming quality for me in topical projects like this one (Living With War, Fork In The Road), is that at least the band is top notch and the playing is always good.

Until now. This band does not groove at all.

Fucking bongos.

It's like a song my second cousin's talentless husband would write, and think he was changing the world and blowing our minds.

Watching so many people discuss Neil's music passionately makes me pop one.

I listened to the Fillmore "Cowgirl" yesterday -- the bass is definitely flat, and seems to fall further out over the course of the (very long) jam, but to my ears it never approaches a full half step, which would create a dissonance I just don't hear. I know the hardcore Neil fans had a lot of misgivings about this set -- its omissions and whatnot -- but I love it from beginning to end. I'm a big fan of the "hot off the soundboard" feel of so many of these late 1960's/early 1970's Fillmore recordings -- Neil, the Dead, Miles, etc. It's one of those brief moments in rock history I'd love to jump into a time machine and crash for a week or two.

I don't think it makes much sense to complain about the Fillmore set (beyond excluding "Cinnamon Girl" from the CD version) because there were not really any "omissions". I think Neil used most, if not all, of the songs he had tape of. Much of the original recording was discarded long ago.

All of the Live Archive releases are brilliant and essential, IMO.
