Regardless of how successful Brad might have become had it actually transpired, bear in mind I'm no great fan either, I think the substance of Regan's complaint was that a big promotional push was actually planned by Sony and promised to the band and then one day it was unexpectedly cancelled. From probing around, Regan was given the impression that certain other members of the band had put pressure on Sony to back off on Brad so as not to take focus away from Pearl Jam.

Personally, I thought it might have been Jeff and not Ed, but who knows (which might fit in with the competitive nature of Jeff and Stone's relationship mentioned above.) In the PJ20 book, they mention that Regan would have tried out for either Mother Love Bone or Pearl Jam (I can't remember which) but it wasn't going to work out as he and Jeff don't get along. Funny that Regan's kind of taken over Jeff's role of being the band's artistic director in recent years.

So its his fault for the fucking pj socks?
That's a pretty clever revenge, on his part, really.

Didn't they first start selling socks in like 1996?

Interesting, I didn't remember Jeff and Regan didn't/don't get along, was that in the book too? I think it was a symptom of that time period. This was also when Cobain was all over the band and EV especially was extremely conscious of how they were being percieved by respected members of the community, particularly the MLB side of the band since that's where the whole Mark Arm/Cobain gripe with the band came from going back to the Green River breakup.

The biggest revelation from the whole PJ20 thing was how tight Ed and Jeff really are. The whole b-side/rarity setlist-changing customized artwork/vinyl fanclub side of the band I feel is all from the Ed/Jeff relationship, I believe. Stone was the guy who thought bigger was better and I've never sensed he was heavily involved in all of that stuff, and we've heard his initial disappointment from the Vitalogy/No code days from that. Hell, Dave A was let go based on being on the wrong side of the Ed/Jeff line. I think Regan/Brad fell on the other side of that line, and therefore Stone, so I see it as an uncomfortable part of the whole band relationship. It's total conjecture, but even as a fan, I've felt a strong distance from Stone from the "lean years" of Binaural and Riot Act. I don't think he was feeling that era at all and I think he's probably in a better place within the band right now than he was then. If he was going to ever leave the band, that time period was probably it.

I think if someone held a gun to Ed's head and asked him if he could of handled things from the early days differently he would probably agree. Ed was the main one behind the Dave's firing and then he didn't even have the balls to do it. Did he halt the brad promotion to keep his own sanity? maybe, you have to also put into the equation that Ed has a very serious stalker issues from 93 to 00. If anything, I think maybe that played a bigger role in how he acted in public, with stone and with the rest of the band members.

Tuolumne wrote:I don't think it's overstated. I've posted this before, and still don;t understand how it didn't make waves in the PJ community, but read the book "Grunge is Dead" by Greg? Prato. Regan Hagar, one of Stone's best, if not the best friend he has, absolutely lays into EdVed and Pearl Jam over Brad stuff from years ago. It's actually pretty harsh. I assume all is well now since he works within the PJ organization, but there was a huge amount of resentment and it was from Stone's best friend. I can only think there was as much, if not even more resentment between Stone himself with Ed. Read the book, it makes it pretty clear that SOMETHING happened in the past, and it was most likely related to Brad. Also, just different approaches to handling success and leadership within the band. I think they are over it but shit sticks around I'm sure. That said, some of the greatest creative relationships are often born out of conflict. I think it's great when they make an effort cause there is a real interesting spark between those two.
Well, yeah, I'm not necessarily saying they're best friends or anything, but like you said, I think most of it is just total conjecture and based on overstating things that have been said by the band (i.e. that Stone 'hated' Vitalogy or stuff like that).

That being said, if it did truly go down like Regan said (the band nixing Sony's plans for that group), I'd be pretty furious if I was him. Who knows if that is actually what happened, though.

if that were how it actually went down i'd find just as much fault in Stone for not taking a stand against it.

While the power shift was certainly in effect at the time Stone still held a very powerful voice in PJ.

Yeah, I was thinking earlier how cool it'd be if the band tackled a new one from Stone's new album on the next tour since they did Setting Forth. But I doubt it.

or "Fits".

Stone doesn't want to sing lead at PJ shows though and i don't blame him. Sometimes i wish Ed would take the reverse advise and put down the guitar.

yeah Fits would be nice too...Stone did Bayleaf this year at a Brad show. And he doesnt sing there a single song.
So Eddie, let stone sing.

That chant in 2005 was hilarious. And Stone´s answer was more hilarious.

This new album might be good based on the fact that they haven't been hyping it up. They did that for the last three records... huge media push... big expectations... yet with #10, so far not hardly a whisper about a single song.... Be it as it may, this might be the renaissance for pj that aerosmith experienced in the mid-nineties

Yeah me neither. I remember hearing I Am Mine on the radio a few times and that was about it.

Ironically they have done more promotion of the band since they moved from Epic Records. I think they will do a big push for number 10, they are just waiting till they have their spring marketing conference at the Fairmont Olympic. I actually thought they did some interesting things last time - the picture hunt was pretty cool. Did anyone ever find out what the boy running from the train was from?
While a Western guitar motif lost on the swings drum bass fusion, get your own thoughts into the subconscious often forgotten. "Pendulum" is a sweeping soul from the ballast.

I thought that picture hunt was a bit tacky. Childish almost.

They should look up daft punks marketing campaign for their new record. That's a masterclass in building up interest and excitement.
