I mean, imagine listening to this album without any vocals. Would any of the music be memorable?

I think the best tracks are "Superhero" and "Separation Anxiety", which bring some needed urgency and ferocity. I can't believe they don't push the piano and keyboard harder, since that was always a huge part of what made FNM's sound so distinct. The only song that sounds uniquely FNM to me is "Superhero", and it's almost entirely for that reason. The rest sounds like pretty typical Patton rock.

We'll see how it goes as I give it further listens. It's not bad or anything, it just seems kind of limp.
Please mate, tomahawk?? Your kidding right. You do know FNM used the bass before tomahawk.

I agree partially with what LV said, the intro of Cone Of Shame reminded me a lot of something from Oddfellas. Maybe its because im a fan of that album and i saw the band on that tour, but there are little things, that sound like Tomahawk. Thats not a bad thing at all in my book.

As for the music itself, well its top notch. Its not their best record, but its a great comeback.

I am familiar with all of Patton's work, sir. It doesn't really matter who used what first; I just said this album doesn't sound all that distinct from Patton's other recent projects, such as Tomahawk.

I expect to really like this. Haven't listened to it yet, but a "(meh)" reaction from the guy that doesn't like No Cities to Love is an indication this is gonna kick ass.

Oddfellows is superior musically. I think the only thing this has in common with Tomahawk is Mike Patton's latest rock vocal techniques.

And yes cone of shame sounds like something else.

In small parts maybe, but I don't think it's what the band were being influenced by, in fact, there are so many small parts of 'other' influences here that if you blink you'll miss it IMO. Anyway, my bad, I thought you meant the album itself reminded you of Oddfellows but re- read you post and realized I made the wrong assumption.

Yeah, I agree about the musicality. I think my comparison may have been a little hasty. I made it mostly because, I think, I feel this album is as unexciting as Oddfellows was. But, to that album's credit, if you had played me a track without me knowing what it was, I probably could have guessed it was Tomahawk. Whereas if you played me any Sol Invictus track besides "Superhero", I don't think I could have told you who it was other than Patton was singing.

Is it just me but some of guitar parts off Cone of Shame remind "Applebite" from Soundgarden-96?

Man, this album has grown on me like a....motherfucker. There really isn't a bad tune in the batch. Cone Of Shame is a monster. Also agree with who ever said the album version of Mother fucker is better than the single release. Album version is identical but sounds like the mix/master on the album has more punch.

Okay so I've heard this album about ten times now. Every track has something going for it, not a bad song on the album. Matador and Cone Of Shame would be the picks so far.

My only problem is that it's all in the same sonic territory and there seems to be 2 types of song on the album. I know what LoVer is getting at about there not being a strong FNM sound, merely a Patton sound.

I still haven't hear Album of the Year but the guitarist seems to stay with a particular sound. Maybe that's a lack of producer or how they wanted this project to sound. Could it be their Backspacer? A quick and to the point album with no fat, just muscle and sinew. In that case they passed. But it doesn't satisfy as a FNM record. Weird, huh. It's a good album though. I wonder how long it will stay with me.

This pitchfork review actually nails it for me. http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/20339-sol-invictus/

Pitchfork sucks.

Black Friday, matador and Seperation anxiety have plenty fat IMO. After a few weeks, it's still awesome. Only Angel Dust is better and not by much.

I really can't fathom how anyone could argue this is a better album than The Real Thing.

Yea, it's very close between the two, in fact those two and Angel are very very close . Then it's KFAD and IY.

I feel this is below KFAD. KFAD had a lot variety and diversity, qualities that FNM always possessed.

Of course those 2 are behind AD and TRT.

Maida vale sessions are awesome!! Seperation anxiety is a colossal track and sunny side up sounds even better here than the record.

Saw them tonight and let me say something, this is a band in the pinnacle of their career. There is nothing nostalgic about the way they approach their music live.
The new album is a monster live...
