Carryover from other fantasy stories? I don't feel like the show made them out to be invincible, just very powerful creatures.@SkitchP wrote:One thing that I really didnt get was that leading up to this, I was under the impression that the dragons were basically invincible, or damn near. Meanwhile, this biggest one seemed significantly slowed when it got hit by pointy sticks.

Im overstating I think. I just really didnt expect it to get seriously slowed by sticks. Frankly, the giants are more impressive in battle than the dragons then.

First battle or not, my concern wasnt about fighting skill, it was about pretty unimpressive physical vulnerability. How did the Targaryen's takeover/unite Westeros with 3 dragons if just the most basic of weapons can slow them down. Hell, one well placed cannonball could probably kill the damn thing.

I kind of get the feeling dragons don't land a whole lot in open field battle.@SkitchP wrote:Monkey_Driven wrote:Still a kid and this was his first battle. I've never seen an episode of this show, but sometimes I'll pop in and read a page or two of this thread. Watching Skitch debate a dragon's power and fighting skill has been fun.

Dragons in battle would roast a large area. Aegon the Conquerer had a small army, but 3 fully grown dragons. See the Field of Fire http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Field_of_Fire@SkitchP wrote:Monkey_Driven wrote:Still a kid and this was his first battle. It makes sense.doone wrote:Drogon's still a baby. A small arena isn't the best fight venue for a dragon, though it's not as if he didn't clear out a bunch of guys pretty quickly, but I was also surprised when the spears went in and it was obviously affected by them. Ride a dragon into open field battle and I think we have a BBQ.

Re: HBO: Game of Thrones (Song of Ice and Fire)
There are technical answers, for sure: Balerion the Black Dread was much bigger and more powerful than Drogon, and he was just one of five dragons Aegon I brought over; those Targaryans had been riding dragons for generations, and Dany had yet (until last night) to figure out how to ride Drogon; and, as others have said, Drogon was young and foolish enough to land in an open field instead of circling high overhead and raining fire on everyone.@SkitchP wrote:Monkey_Driven wrote:Still a kid and this was his first battle. But from a narrative perspective, I think your reaction is what the showrunners were going for. Paired with last week's episode, everyone is imagining that the forces of ice (Others, wights) will eventually collide with the forces of fire (dragons); if dragons were damn-near invincible, that impending war would seem like an afterthought. Seeing a dragon be hurt by conventional weapons will add drama to what's coming next.
