These are good actors, spike. You won't even notice it anymore after the first 10/15 minutes.

It's the shortest of the bard's plays. They could read through it in 90 minutes.spike wrote:verse dialogue for 2-3 hours may be a deal breaker

Yeah any version of this (stage or screen) that runs more than 2 hours MAX is doing something wrong. And probably pissing off spirits.cutuphalfdead wrote:It's the shortest of the bard's plays. They could read through it in 90 minutes.spike wrote:verse dialogue for 2-3 hours may be a deal breaker

Do you ever run around your theater just saying "Macbeth!" over and over again?durdencommatyler wrote:Yeah any version of this (stage or screen) that runs more than 2 hours MAX is doing something wrong. Has anyone had the balls to do a Macbeth film and eliminate a lot of the dialogue? They should. Polanski's film would have been great if he cut the soliloquies and just let the actors' performances express that inner turmoil. Film is a different medium than stage; even if it's Shakespeare, you don't have to be slavish.

Oh, and obviously I'm talking about straight adaptations using Shakespeare's actual words, not recontextualized adaptations like Throne of Blood.

No, you're right. The words of the greatest writer and linguist and dramatist in the English language usually get in the way.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Has anyone had the balls to do a Macbeth film and eliminate a lot of the dialogue? LV has a point. The best cinematic Shakespeare adaptations are by Kurosawa: Throne of Blood and Ran. Both are decidedly Shakespearean, but even more so they are decidedly cinematic.

If you're going to do Shakespeare. Use his text. That doesn't mean you can't adjust and edit or whatever. I once saw a 90 min. Hamlet that completely excised Rosengrantz and Gildenstern and it was fantastic.
There's admittedly a lot of filler in Shakespeare. But Macbeth isn't one of those shows. It isn't filled will poetry and linguistic witchcraft.
If you want to tell the same story, fine. Write a new script or whatever. Shakespeare ripped people off all the time. He's way dead. I have no problem with folks ripping him off.
But if you're going to do Shakespeare's Macbeth, you better fucking respect the language and the original text.

So use his text. But it's okay to excise some of it. Or tell the same story with a new script. But if you're going to do it, use his text.
I...I'm still confused?
