If you're a fan of American folk music and you've yet to spin Martin Sexton's Black Sheep, then we have a problem.

Does anyone here enjoy his work?
Live at the old quarter is one of my all time favorite albums.

I'm sure you'll like it. His lyrics can be a bit depressing, but there is a beauty to them as well. He also tells a few truly awful jokes, which helps to lighten the mood.Strat wrote:tommymtcom wrote:Ok, good to know.E.H. I've always really enjoyed this cover (from the Big Lebowski soundtrack) It's the first Townes song I ever heard.

His stuff can be tough to nail down. I mostly just have various live albums (his studio recordings have a tendency to be overdone). Can you get it on the Big Lebowski soundtrack?

Heartbreaking perfection.
FYI most all his studio albums are back in print on vinyl:

Bryan McPherson is a decent choice.
Had the privilege of interviewing him for his upcoming album Wedgewood.

I listened to "Live at the Old Quarter" last night and thought about posting it in this thread -- to my surprise and delight this whole page has been kind of a TVZ lovefest.
I think "Rex's Blues" and "Two Girls" are my favorites.

Sweet song. I like these sparse bluegrassy tunes when they're more reverent than twee. Sara Watkins has a great character to her voice.

Leadbelly. Dust Bowl Ballads. I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive. Tanko Bushi.
A lot of the more European-influenced American folk leans too pretty for me. If I want my folk music extra white, I'll just spend a day with the Dubliners, thx.

I can't say enough how spectacular John Prine is live. Incredible storyteller and his lyrics hit a nerve and make you feel the meaning of the song. Man, don't ever pass up a chance to see him in concert. He's in Illinois this Friday and Saturday for you RMers up there, and in Folsom in December. (I'm looking at you, dpupenya).
