Stannis, man, fuck. I have a feeling I'm not gonna like next week. Someone I like will most likely die I'm assuming to keep up with the shock factor, and killing off good people.

I think this show is in danger of going down the 24 road. What I mean by that is almost all the characters that helped make the show what it was, were killed off at some point. In the first few seasons of 24, the show had really strong secondary characters (Palmer was more like a co-star with Jack), but by Season 6, they were all pretty much dead. It was then left to Jack (Kiefer) to carry the show pretty much by himself, alongside a new crop of secondary characters that were not as good / interesting.

Dany, Tyrion, and Jon Snow are all untouchable until the (nearly) very end.

And the problem is, once someone has made it known that they're a book reader, everything they say almost seems like they're implying something.

Have we learned nothing? Eddard Stark was killed at the end of the first season. Anyone can die (this does not include Tyrion, because I will not accept that).

I've never been huge on Stannis, not like Mecca is.

I've seen Stannis as the lesser of evils plenty of times throughout the show, but I've never forgotten that he burns non believers alive. Also, this is a world where there isn't one deity with power and the rest are fake, different religious traditions in this world exist at the same time, and are simultaneously real.

I've always been afraid of Stannis winning and then burning all the godswoods, which would be devastating.

I, uh, think I understand where you're going with this, Pete. They talked about it on the Nerdette podcast this week--i.e., that there are plenty of gods in this world (The Seven, The Old Gods, The Drowned God, the horse god of the Dothraki, etc.), but the only one who has done something miraculous is R'hllor--he's brought people back from the dead, FFS! So this makes STM's connection to that god seem troublesome.

However, I think this line of thinking underplays the old gods. We haven't learned much about them (in the TV show or the books), but I think when we return to Bran eventually, our thinking about this stuff is going to shift.

Yeah. The Old gods are what I'm talking about when I say other gods also have power. And I make that assumption based on the power of the Children of the Forest being real.

Plus wargs, especially Bran's power.

I had this theory that all the gods that are real and the show's different types of magic are actually really just some other power that holds the universe together, but I think I'm overthinking it.

It was funny. Peter referred to the books as "a world in which god is real and has real powers," and everyone guffawed.

Major book spoilers in that podcast, so no one else should listen if you'd like to go into the show fresh.

Same here. He just looked annoyed to me, not hurt. Like a human being hit by darts or stung by bees.

Sean asks, “It seemed to me that the Harpy insurgents could have killed or at least seriously injured Drogon if they would have swarmed him or shot him with enough crossbows, spears, etc. How did the dragons of old die? Were they slain? Did they die of old age? Or do we even know. I remember seeing some dragon bones in the dungeons of the red keep back in Season 1.”

They absolutely could have killed Drogon. It’s important to remember that Drogon is a very young dragon — less than three years old — and thus quite vulnerable. As dragons age, their scales become thicker and stronger, growing more resistant to damage and flame. The beasts themselves grow to immense sizes, their flame-breath growing more powerful with each passing year. For reference, here’s a picture from the World of Ice and Fire book of history showing Aegon the Conqueror riding Balerion the Black Dread.

And here’s Dany on Drogon:

Almost there, shorty! Eat your vitamins and people and horses or whatever it is you eat and one day you’ll grow up big and super-ass strong.
