I expected a lot of despondency, but I didn't expect so much outright hate for this episode. I'm surprised how many people are calling it "poorly written" or even the "worst episode of tv I've seen." So far, "meh" has been encouraging.

I thought it was a pretty fantastic episode.

I enjoyed the episode too. I thought the Stannis stuff was a little rushed but otherwise it was one of the better finales they've done.

I really liked how quickly shit feel apart for Stannis. He played it so SO fucking well. And I enjoy the ambiguity of his final moment, too. Really well done, I thought.

I thought the actor did a great job of portraying the hopelessness, stubbornness, and heartbreak of the situation in the last two episodes but I wanted to spend more time with him.

I get why they would choose to gloss over the destruction of Stannis' army. I'd much rather they spent their budget on the battle at Hardhome. But they really should have spent more time on the events leading up to their arrival at Winterfell.

All of those points (and Selyse's suicide and Melisandre's desertion) were addressed with essentially a single line of dialogue and about 20 seconds of screen time each.

We got this:

Solider: "Sir, the sellswords left camp and half your army is gone. Oh and they took the horses"
STM: "fuck"
Soldier: "Sir, your wife killed herself"
STM: "fuck. cut her down. we march for winterfell"
(10 seconds later)
STM: "the siege begins at nightfall"
Soldier: "Sir" (points at approaching Bolton army)
STM: "fuck"

It was extremely rushed. Even a little war council with his captains where they try to dissuade him from marching on Winterfell would have given some insight into his motivations and given his end some weight. Instead we are just left to assume he's butthurt and stubborn. It felt hollow. My only real complaint about the episode.

I gotcha. I just disagree. But a lot of others seem to feel the same way you did. So what the fuck do I know? To me it was all pretty apparent and consistent with the character they'd created on the show. The actor did a marvelous job conveying everything. It was succinct and powerful, I thought. A good use of brevity on a show that can sometimes take three or four steps when it only needed one.

My disappointment is pretty much rooted in high expectations. Winterfell and everything Stannis was the thing I was most excited for this season and I just expected a lot more than this. I wanted more meat to this story than Stannis losing because Ramsay somehow magically destroyed his camp with 20 men and then half his men left. That wasn't very engaging to me. The fight after all that wasn't something I necessarily needed to see, I just expected something more interesting to happen.

I think burning his daughter alive at the stake was pretty interesting. And I LOVE that it had real life, immediate, consequences. Stannis lost his men. His choices led directly to his defeat. Same w/ Snow. I love seeing consequences shredding expectations.

I can see your points regarding the immediate consequences. It was a good angle to see him directly suffer for his wrong doings. It still wasn't satisfying for me, though. The lead up to him burning Shireen wasn't very interesting for me (especially Ramsay's raid) and I still think everything that followed was rushed. I have no problem with him losing, it was just very anti-climatic.
