True enough. But I love the lyrical imagery and the melody -- especially Ed's delivery in the bridge.
It's not that true, really. The guitar riff, composed of a predictable sequence of three very common power chords, is the same, but nothing about the two songs are particularly similar otherwise. No "Porch" jam I've ever heard even operates within the same fundamental musical area as "Severed Hand"; the chords used by the band for the jam section in "Porch" don't even appear in "Severed Hand," and the tone of the improvisation is totally different.

Criticizing two songs like "Porch" and "Severed Hand" for sharing the particular chord sequence they share is like criticizing two Dylan songs for both using open G, C, and D chords, or criticizing two romance novels for both using the phrase "pulsating manhood." It's part of the language of the medium. People's amateur artistic policing gets so tiresome.

I certainly wasn't criticizing. I love both songs. Though, if I'm honest, I like SH a tad more. Again, because of the vocal melody and lyrical imagery.

I'm not a musician. I play a bit of guitar but I'm not a musician. All I know is that when I listen to the opening guitar riff of Porch followed immediately by the opening riff of Severed Hand, they sound the same; I recognize one in the other. Which is not to say the songs are identical, just that those opening riffs absolutely sound like each other. From that point on the songs don't sound the same to these untrained ears.

And I never would have even noticed any similarity if I hadn't played the two back to back with a musician in the room to talk to about the songs. I played them in an effort to demonstrate how different they sound, and marveled at how wrong I was.

Again, not a criticism, just an observation.

The same songs always win anyway. Corduroy, Black, Immortality and In My Tree are RM's top 4, in some order or other.

I've never heard the box set, but I'd hate for you to keep your rebuttal bottled in, so I'll keep things moving along with "The mix is terrible! You can barely hear (insert band member here)!"

Sorry dct, I was directing my comment at twoheadedboy. The riffs do sound similar. But this business of "OMG IT'S JUST PORCH VOLUME 2" that people are always spouting is nonsense. In general I find the pompous self-satisfaction that some people attain from pointing out an artist repeating even the simplest of ideas to be completely obnoxious.

No worries, friend.

I quite agree. Even my musician friend who pointed out the similarities between the two said both songs were cool and he doesn't care if an artist "rips themselves off."

And, though I'm not a huge Metallica fan, I really enjoyed what they did with Unforgiven 2 (I know that's not what we're talking about here, but still).

Same goes for Give to Fly and Going to California. Fine, they have similarities. But they're very different songs.

People love to do the gotcha game of derivation. And maybe it's just me, but I've never heard more than a 10% similarity in GTF and GTC. I try but it's not there. Totally overblown.

The only mix I like better than the 2005 show from that box is perhaps the Easy Street EP mix.
