It's not that true, really. The guitar riff, composed of a predictable sequence of three very common power chords, is the same, but nothing about the two songs are particularly similar otherwise. No "Porch" jam I've ever heard even operates within the same fundamental musical area as "Severed Hand"; the chords used by the band for the jam section in "Porch" don't even appear in "Severed Hand," and the tone of the improvisation is totally different.durdencommatyler wrote:True enough. But I love the lyrical imagery and the melody -- especially Ed's delivery in the bridge.twoheadedboy wrote:Severed Hand just sounds like The Unforgiven Porch 2. There's no ground covered there that hasn't been in an extended Porch jam from 1995.
Criticizing two songs like "Porch" and "Severed Hand" for sharing the particular chord sequence they share is like criticizing two Dylan songs for both using open G, C, and D chords, or criticizing two romance novels for both using the phrase "pulsating manhood." It's part of the language of the medium. People's amateur artistic policing gets so tiresome.
