The Tim Ferriss podcast is pretty good, except when he diverts into eastern medicine and similar crap.

Man, the Wyatt Cenac WTF is fantastic. One of my favorite episodes. I cannot stand Jon Stewart.

That one was rough. I know we're obviously not getting the full story, but he comes across as a bit immature and petty. None of his stories about his mother come close to warranting a decade-long silence. For someone who is so clearly in tune with every single one of his psychological under-currents, he still seems incapable of dealing with them in a rational way. There have got to be better coping strategies than the one he's come up with: maximum detachment.

I totally understand why he is not talking to his mother. That is clearly a toxic relationship and he is doing what is healthy for him. Makes perfect sense, and it's certainly warranted.

I'm sure it is warranted in reality, when you know the whole story...but the things he talked about on WTF just didn't support his actions, IMO.

I've been listening to "Yo, Is This Racist?" lately and it's usually pretty funny.

Also been weeding through The Andy Daly Podcast Pilot Project, and the episodes range from "pretty funny" to "funniest shit ever."

Well, I will lay my cards on the table and say that this issue hits close to home for me. So many of the things Cenac said about his mother, childhood, and general family environment reminded me a lot of what my wife went through. Granted, her experience was much, much worse than his, but I recognized her trauma in his. Having witnessed firsthand the unbelievable amounts of emotional shit my wife had to endure and sort through (and still is enduring and sorting through) makes me bristle when I hear people talk about the universal importance of family. It's bullshit, and my wife completely severing ties with certain family members was the healthiest possible thing for her. Her life and mental health have improved greatly since taking that step. So after having Cenac be so up front about his (lack of) relationship with his mother only to hear Maron say "Well maybe you'll hash it out someday." or you say his actions weren't warranted and he's just being detached really irks me. Cenac articulated it perfectly when he said the only reason they kept talking is because they were related and felt obligated, but it wasn't good for any of them. Society puts immense pressure on people to maintain a relationship with their family, ignorant of the reality that, for some people, that is an extremely toxic thing to do. That pressure only makes things worse by making the person feel guilty and abnormal, like something is wrong with them or they're doing something bad. It just makes a terrible situation worse. It stops people from feeling healthy and moving on. I mean, if Cenac had said those things about someone who wasn't his parent, would you still be saying he shouldn't have ended that relationship?

I hope that didn't come off as hostile or confrontational; just being honest. I've seen so much pain and heartbreak in what my wife has gone through, and it gets under my skin to hear attitudes like these expressed.

It was good. But it also made me think about the guy...his problem with his mom, they way he was dealing with Stewart asking him for his presence in their last show..and yet, " yeah i dont know...he didnt tell me once he was sorry that one time..."

Man, just get over it.

i was too, but to be honest...Stewart handle it very good. He got the whole team together and said he was sorry, and like 2 years from that he is asking the guy to be on the last show..and he even told the network to consider him to work there again..thats why he sounds like a little guy when he is still " thinking " about going.
