This movie looks terrible. Why is del Toro so hellbent on doing stuff like this? "The Devil's Backbone" and "Pan's Labyrinth" were fucking great. Why do we need another movie about giant robots?

I disagree. You can also have giant robots in your movie, but at the same time you can direct the material with competent filmmaking and coherent storytelling. I trust Del Toro.

But you'll be happy to know that Del Toro has written and plans to direct Crimson Peak, an original ghost story in the vein of Shining and The Haunting (1963). Del Toro is quoted as saying that he is tired of the found footage ghost movies today and wants to go back to those old gothic stories.

I'll be all over Crimson Peak. Emma Stone. :li:
Although that love will be tested, as she's apparently Woody Allen's latest muse.

While I imagine the robot voice in the trailer pre-existed the Portal games, it doesn't help me take it seriously. Secondly: Every time I see Idris Elba I am reminded of his efforts in The Wire to further confuse my ability to distinguish between an honest American and a British impostor which automatically makes me suspicious. Lastly every time I see an obviously Japanese inspired giant robot I can't help but interpret it as an enactment of Japanese dreams of revenge against the US post WWII.

I'll also be seeing it at it's midnight release.

I'm sold if someone can tell me which anime this "Jaeger" business comes from. Oh, and thrown in a totally unnecessary St. Crispin's day speech from Idris Elba in the second trailer and I'll buy the collectors edition.

Hahaha. I know what anime series you talking about I think. Don't remember the name, but I do remember the monsters or bad guys were called Angels.

No way that speech is unnecessary...unnecessary will be a sex scene...unnecessary will be the American Jaeger being the one(s) that saves the day.

Even if this takes inspiration from an anime series, I'll take that over the countless remakes and sequels.

I actually burst out laughing when the young guy from Sons of Anarchy appeared. Just awful.
