I think you're in the wrong thread
But that theme song!
Yeah, true, that theme is great. Also, Jaws is exceedingly well structured, edited, performed, written, and filmed. What about it doesn't work for you?

I think it's completely fine on all fronts. But that's it. It's fine. I can't for the life of me figure out why it's considered the masterpiece that it is. It is well structured, but obviously so. It is well edited, but not excitingly so. It is well filmed but full of money-shot masturbation as is Spielberg's wont. I'm not sure it's well acted, but it's not poorly acted either. It's just... fine. I watched it. I only checked my watch once. And when it was over I was ready to do something else. I've watched it probably four times in my life and it's never excited me the way it does others.

But the music is great. And it's exceedingly quotable. So there's that.

Courtney Barnett's appeal eludes me completely

I don't think it's terribly surprising that someone who claims to be more or less indifferent to song lyrics would find himself unmoved by Barnett's music. The fuzzy, Sonic Youth-y distortion and overall loose-limbed garage rock vibe are pluses for me, but in the end I think her music is motivated by her words, which I would describe as tightly written mini-narratives that seek to expose the relationship between the silly and the profound, though the execution is way less pretentious than my description of it. I hear shades of Kim Gordon and Stephen Malkmus is her music, but also of Elvis Costello and Richard Thompson -- she has an eye for the mundane and the absurd, but also a compulsion to subject these absurdities to meticulous form and structure, and I find myself taken with how these forms and structures play off against the casual grunginess of the music and her quasi-musical talk-singing. I also think she has a knack for dropping quaint details that lend a tangible realness -- and in turn a relatability -- to her characters, i.e. the guy who stands on a rooftop and looks down at all the buildings below, pretending to play "Sim City," the swimmer trying to impress the person in the lane next to him at the pool, etc. I was an instant fan.

I enjoyed her most recent album. Not as much as others seem to, but I did like it. I've only listened once and I intend to listen a few more times. But I think I like KD's paragraph about her music more than I like her music.

Keep talking, KD! I want to believe!

Me too, man.

And I think KD's post is very on-point.

I like a few songs. If it comes on the radio or the wife's playlist, I'm not gonna change it, but it's not something I'm going to purposely listen to on my own.

I'll go further by saying that I don't even know who that is. So, you're a least doing better than me.

From Antony and the Johnsons.

That one album is pretty great. I think it's called I am a Bird or something like that.

:nice:

Describe the sound so I can decide if I can listen to it at work without bugging my coworkers.

A gender-dubious lead singer breathes whimsically through chamber-poppy type tunes.

Shouldn't offend anyone too much.
