For how little I run and my age, it's pretty respectable. I will update on Sunday with either a happy face or sad face. Sub 2 I'll be happy, sub 1:50 really happy. I want to be really happy. This same race last year was my first time running further than 7 miles and haven't run further than 7 miles since then. I have a better idea of how hard I can hit it on the back stretch and hope to lop off some time from last year's 1:57.

You would rock this one. First 3 miles is a casual decent and then only to uphills. It's flat and fast with some world class scenery going through Stanley Park and hitting the seawall. It's very cool running in the sun along the ocean's edge and looking up at our local ski hills covered in snow. The race ends half a block from my work so I can be showered and changed before heading home. Sweet deal all around.
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

I cheat though. I do at least 75 miles a week on my bike going balls out. I get lots of cardio work, just not running. Everyone's body is different. Mine is good better for arobic exercise than anarobic. I have to work like a dog to get strong. I have a buddy who seemingly thinks about working out and looks ripped.

My brother is one of these people, he pretty much went from not running at all to a 3:30 marathon in about 6 weeks.

Got my first workout in this morning since Tuesday. I have a head cold and it wasn't my best effort but still counts, right?

Fuck, 2:01:16. Just started out too fast and then was dying in the back stretch. Hottest day of the year didn't help but excuses are for girls. Oh well, another run next month, 16km all up hill. To the shower, then the bar. I figure if I time this rigth I can be passed out in the sun by 1pm. So pissed I didn't get sub 2.

10 miles in 67 minutes

Only got one run in during our trip to Flagstaff and it wasn't really a mountain trail run, but it was a good one.
The kids ended up eating and playing at a little rest area on Saturday. I started running down the road and told the wife to measure 10 miles and then stop. The elevation didn't bother me at all. As a matter of fact, I felt spectacular and started blasting the miles. The wife passed me about 40 minutes in and I knew I was gonna have a sub-70. I picked it up even more. At about 64 minutes, I rounded a bend and could see the car. I kicked and passed the car at 67 minutes flat. Although not the mountain trail I wanted to run, the views from the road were great and the weather (about 65) was perfect.

Honestly, heat kills times. I wouldn't beat yourself up about it.

been a while since i checked in here. i have pretty much abandoned the marathon training schedule i was doing, as i was just hurting myself. it's also been the shittiest spring in memory in the twin cities. running outside has been tough. last weekend was beautiful and i just decided to run as far as i could. i have this app called map my run, which seems pretty cool. at mile 9 i thought to myself, "today i'm running a marathon no one knows about." by mile 12, i was thinking, "i hope i can get home." i wound up running 14 miles. took me about 2:03, and i had nothing left in the tank. i vowed the next weekend i would be better prepared.

cut to this weekend. it was in the 40s. i had 3 energy gels in my pocket. map my run was off. it told me i'd done a mile way before i had. as time wore on, i think it righted itself a bit. i took gels at 10, 16, and 21. i hit 26.2 miles at 3:42:35. i was fucking chuffed. i'd never run more than 15 miles before. my excitement has since been tempered. i think my app was generous by about 2 miles. i'll never know for sure, but i think it was maybe 24 miles. if so, it means i'm very close to my goal of finishing a marathon in under 4 hours. but i'm also very close to not making it.

positives: it was my longest run ever. it was a bit hilly, which the marathon i'm running is not. i have a strained right groin from coaching baseball, and i was able to run through some pretty heinous pain for the last 45 minutes. i have the willpower and pain threshold to do this motherfucker. i'm still heavy. i only recently started cutting weight. i ran at probably 165 today. i'd like to be at 155 on june 22nd. no shin splints.

negatives: it was really cool today. i hardly sweat at all. that likely won't be the case during the marathon. my right knee is killing me right now. groin too. i don't think i ran a full marathon distance, and i was a bag of shit when i quit today. if it was only 24 miles, i think i would have been a couple minutes past 4 hours. i have no idea how i'm going to get out of bed for work tomorrow.

as a last thought, i listened to the arctic monkeys live at glastonbury on a loop. what a great band!

I have little doubt you will finish under 4 hours. Even if it was "only" 24, you broke through "the wall" and managed the pain, which is the most important part of marathoning. As the weather warms spend a decent amount of time outside, even if it's just playing with the kids at the park. Just get your body acclimatized as much as possible. Honestly, if you drop another 10 pounds you'll be golden.

The only thing I see stopping you at your race is a crash and burn. You seem to have some natural speed. I remember you cranking out some 7s earlier in this thread. Shoot for a negative split and remember that all those hefty gentlemen passing you at mile 5 will be dead on the side of the road at mile 20. Don't go out too fast!

My "A" shoes (NB 1600s) now have 700+ miles on them. I was gonna buy another pair of 1600s, but went with a pair of NB Minimus HI-REZ instead. They should pair well with my "B" shoes (GoRuns) and I'll finally be sock-free.

These are just 4 oz. These will have to do until I can save up enough money to have Vibram foot pods surgically implant into the soles of my feet.

Running 10 miles in an hour is a goal I'll probably never reach now. 62 flat is my PR.

I need to get a decent pair of running shoes. I'm using some 40 dollar nikes right now.

Well guys, I told you about my injured heal. Turns out I have a bruised achilles tendon. I gotta keep stretching it and just let time take it's course. Good news is I can ride my bike without pain.

10 miles in 68 minutes

Left work early and hit the gym. Tummy was acting up all morning, so I wasn't sure how I would respond on the treadmill. Things went swimmingly. Set the treadmill to just below 7-minute miles, then blasted a final 6-minute mile. Hit the sauna afterward for planks and push-ups. It'll be back to the gym tomorrow for a back-to-back.

That finishing kick builds confidence, doesn't it?

I went on a two hour bare foot hike ala caveman style along the ridge of powell. My feet still hurt. Ouch.
