At least three songs on Lightning Bolt could be sung by Weird Al without a single line change, and people would think it was a joke and laugh. A few might need some accordion so they don't sound so boring.

It would definitely make it a better record, though.

Just listened to both of these again yesterday and Lightning Bolt is still better.

I think Backspacer would benefit from being resequenced, as it's all over the place.

Well, to be fair, only assigning a -1 for songs like The Fixer or Force of Nature really doesn't capture how bad these songs really are.

It's an energetic, catchy power pop song. It's unique in PJ's catalogue. I'm down with it. Definitely the best song on Backspacer. Probably better than anything on LB too.

I didn't realize Amongst The Waves is not well liked here. I don't really dig the mix of the song on the album, but the song itself is pretty cool!

I like the vaguely dissonant harmony in the verse to "Amongst the Waves," and overall think that musically there's more to the song than meets the ear. But it fails to achieve the cathartic moment it aims for, and as a result always feels somewhat unsatisfying. One of the few "Backspacer" songs that in my opinion worked better live.

I wonder if more uplifting solo would have helped--something akin to I am Mine or the 'patterns' at the end of Force of Nature?
