Just read them all.Simple Torture wrote:I'd suggest reading books 4 and 5--there are enough differences between them anf the show that you'll be lost without them. There's no release date for book 6, not even any solid rumors. You'll probably have enough time to start with book 1 and read them all.darth_vedder wrote:So when the hell is book 6 coming out? Also, if I just pick it up from there is it ok? I don't feel like reading the other 5 books, but was thinking of reading the new one if/when it's ever released.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through the first book and I would definitely recommend it. It's interesting reading this stuff knowing where it is going.
GRRM makes a pretty big deal about Jon Snow's parentage as well. It definitely feels like there is more to it than just Ned and some random woman.

First book is almost identical to the first season of the show. The biggest thing I got out of book 1 that I didn't get out of the show was the importance of Bran's dreams with the three eyed crow.

His supposed death hurt so much more than Robb's death. I was swearing at the goddamn television.Bammer wrote:Pure speculation but I'll spoiler it anyway:

You immediately start thinking about who's left to "root for", and the obvious choice would be Daenerys. However I just rewatched season 1 and another black sheep in all this may be Benjen Stark who as far as we know is just "missing" north of the wall.
