I'd suggest reading books 4 and 5--there are enough differences between them anf the show that you'll be lost without them. There's no release date for book 6, not even any solid rumors. You'll probably have enough time to start with book 1 and read them all.
Just read them all.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through the first book and I would definitely recommend it. It's interesting reading this stuff knowing where it is going.

GRRM makes a pretty big deal about Jon Snow's parentage as well. It definitely feels like there is more to it than just Ned and some random woman.

First book is almost identical to the first season of the show. The biggest thing I got out of book 1 that I didn't get out of the show was the importance of Bran's dreams with the three eyed crow.

Pure speculation but I'll spoiler it anyway:
Spoiler: show
Jon Snow is "deader than dead" according to one of the directors. And I believe him. However, Jon _____ (Stark, Targaryen, etc.) is very much alive.

His supposed death hurt so much more than Robb's death. I was swearing at the goddamn television.
You immediately start thinking about who's left to "root for", and the obvious choice would be Daenerys. However I just rewatched season 1 and another black sheep in all this may be Benjen Stark who as far as we know is just "missing" north of the wall.
