It didn't have a bad reception among the fan base? Have you read this board? Also have you checked the pit lately? They dislike Backspacer almost as much as us these days. They had a rank the albums thread recently and almost all the posters had Backspacer in the bottom 2.

Platypus is right. It sure didnt have a bad reception.
Oh I get it.. you're both kidding.

"Oh yeah, we wrote this thing, it's rock, it's got a cool groove, I hope people will like it." I mean, these people have been musicians for decades. Where is the passion? WHAT WILL THE SONG BE ABOUT? WHAT ARE THIS ALBUM'S THEMES? Where do PJ see their music going, what influences them and excites them now? We never hear anything detailed about their art anymore, to the extent that I'm almost certain they're just bored of it. Do they honestly think references to punk and Pink Floyd are going to have us salivating?
They made good records when half the band didn't like the music they were making. In the moment they started caring about not pissing each other off their albums started to be boring. They went from releasing albums that polarised their fan base to albums that have most of the fan base in agreement that their recent output leaves a lot to be desired.

Interesting its gone from "experimental" to "it's sounds like pearl jam". Mike mccready talks about specific tunes he has contributed but stone doesnt. I'm putting that down to difference in personality between the two more than stone hasn't contributed anything .

Either way this is finally happening!!!

I'm excited and officially can't wait to hear the final product. Bring it on :-)

harmless wrote:One of the things I used to love most about this band was that their albums usually had a tight, unified concept to them, particularly (for example) Vitalogy, No Code, Yield. You could talk about how those albums were composed as a complete piece of work for ever, and we have done on this site. Maybe it's retrospect that allows it; I don't know, did PJ talk about those so blandly? I'm not sure.
Here is a brief interview with Stone in February of 1996:
http://pearljamhistory.no.sapo.pt/PJArt ... _noise.htm

And here is Ed and Jeff talking a little bit about Yield, a few months pre-release.
http://pearljamhistory.no.sapo.pt/PJArt ... new_lp.htm

The tone of the interviews is a little different, but overall I don't think they're really giving a whole lot more information than they give now. To me the really telling thing is when Stone says they're "just starting" in a February interview for a record that got released that August.

Here's the archive from which I got the two pieces above:

I think it's a Seattle scene thing to not over-hype albums. It's so cliche that bands pump their new albums that I think it's one of those frowned upon things over there. It does appear really disingenuise when you follow follow a band and each time they come out with a record they go, "last album was okay, but THIS one is the best ever!". However, I do kind of envy like U2's fanbase when Bono will come out and say something like "I dare anyone to make a better album than ours", I gotta admit when you hear your guy say that it must really get you pumped.........

I don't notice any discernable difference in how they talk about albums pre-release. It's not like they used to give away the farm months in advance - "OMG you guyz, just wait to you hear what we've cooked up now!! The whole thing is a tone poem owing heavily to Astral Weeks." They usually get specific right before the album comes out, and even then they don't really like doing interviews, so you get what you get.

I'm going to generalize b/c it's true: The long wait in between albums has caused RM's psyche to split. We've moved so far to the extremes to uncover new shit to talk about that there is no longer any new shit to talk about. Pearl Jam has been vivisected. RM has eaten itself.

The worst part is this happened like a year ago and we're still chugging on fumes. Thank Christ for Moonlander.

Most true thing ever, you speak the truth.

I'd argue that, on top of eating itself, RM has shit everything out and eaten the shit again, resulting in massive verbal diarreah, which is where we're at right now.

Most of the board was ecstatic about Backspacer when it came out. It was received well. That's what the word "reception" means: how it was received, not where it stands after being processed over a period of four years of relative inactivity.

If the current state of the board is "massive verbal diarrhea" I wonder what it's like when it's constipated.

People are still processing backspacer? I thought it was left for dead by now. It was received well, if by received well you mean people tried to convince themselves it was good after the first couple of listens.
